What the heck is it??
Hello I'm new here and new the AC Cobra. I just purchased this and
Was told it is a Superformance build but the dealer wasn't sure. Can anybody help me understand what exactly I have here? Thanks! Only plate in the engine bay a square aluminum plate just says vechical no. And a vin number 5R07A296146 which is a 1965 Mustang??? https://ibb.co/f8NnqR1 https://ibb.co/ChwnypX https://ibb.co/rFPHcSM https://ibb.co/7Xqs5bS |
Looks like a B&B Manufacturing Cobra.
Spd_rcr_05 just recently posted some photos of his new B&B Cobra that he purchased on BaT. The roll hoop and the bumperettes look identical so that's why I'm assuming its a B&B. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1966-shelby-cobra-10/ |
That does look very very close for sure. I'm very happy I signed up today. What with the Mustang Vin number?

Not Superformance. The under hood shot is a clear tell. See this SPO photo:
https://www.cobracountry.com/wp-cont...1224x755-1.jpg Yours (note the two 'bumps' on the firewall not evident on a Superformance): https://i.ibb.co/vZcJWCr/20220215-111904.jpg Also, look at the dash in this photo - much different than yours (flat across the bottom): https://www.cobracountry.com/wp-cont...1032x710-1.jpg Yours (dropped in the middle, steering column is higher on dash): https://i.ibb.co/hL5VZjH/20220215-114613.jpg Here's where to find Superformance chassis number: https://www.secondstrike.com/Registr...ions_MkIII.pdf Superformance would never use a '65 Mustang VIN - that's unlawful in most places, BTW. |
Is it possible this guy used pieces from a 65 Mustang chassis? And registered it that way? I think there is a ford mustang key that came with it and it doesn't do anything.

I hope you didn't pay a Superformance price. Normally we need more pictures of specific areas for a positive ID, but the small-diameter, extra wide roll bar hoop, the deep vertical lip around the engine compartment opening and the firewall "bumps" indicate that you probably have a B&B / LA Exotics (earlier brand name) replica. Live axle and very different car (price-wise and other factors) from an independent rear suspension Superformance replica. Be wary of the creative titling - that can lead to problems. Other than maybe some Mustang II components, highly unlikely there are any significant chassis sections that could qualify it to be titled as a Mustang.

In your cars case, with the rollbar layout, I'm thinking a Holiday or an early Emerson, although the strange humps in the engine compartment opening have me stumped. Sadly, unless you can track the car back to it's original owner, you may never know. More pictures from the place you purchased it can be found HERE My advice is to get shots of the chassis and suspension and post them here. As long as you are happy, that is all that matters. I only paid 40k for the car I'm alittle scared of the Vin tampering however! I'll get some photos of the underside for sure. There seems to be a lot of new and high quality parts that where used.

The firewall bumps were used on LA Exotics and possibly some early B&B replicas. Look at the engine compartment pics of an LAE here. the bumps were originally intended for mounting of hood pins and though painted black on this car, they are plainly visible.

I do see that I bet it is an LAE, the car is titled a Ford Cobra Classic just to clarify.

Another LAE / B&B sporting the firewall titties:

My first ERA from the 80’s had a 65 Mustang VIN. Originally titled in MI then I titled in IN and then sold in MA. All with no issues.
