Good thoughts & Well wishes to our car pal Jay. heal quickly. Cheers Tom.

The news reports said burns on face and hands. I was going to guess he had a carb backfire but they said he was working on one of his steam cars.

Many Steams cars have been converted to be fired with Gasoline since it runs cleaner than Kero, even though sometimes the pilot fuel is still Kero. Jay was trying to unclog a fuel line when it sprayed out and ignited.

Sorry it happened to Jay - I wish him a complete recovery - but its a timely reminder to all us petrolheads of the dangers of working with petrol. Sometimes we become very casual when working with it.

A friend of Jay said the news media has greatly exaggerated the extent of his injuries and he'll be back shortly at 100%.

Glad to hear Jay's injuries are not terribly severe. Must not have caught his magnificent hair on fire. That would have burned for days...sez an envious skin head.

I dunno, this sounds pretty serious to me

His injuries are VERY serious. He has undergone one surgery already with more needed. He has 2nd and 3rd degree deep burns to his hands and face.

I once saw a video of a Cobra owned by Jay’s detail employee. They asked him what Jay recommend for the car and he said fire extinguisher. I bought one shortly after, hope Jay has a speedy recovery!

I wonder if he was alone or had someone with him.

Redfish 11-16-2022 08:00 PM

Yikes. A scary reminder about safety and freak accidents in the garage. Pray for a speedy recovery.

I was lucky enough to get a tour of his garage about 12 years ago. So cool, and he had a cobra there too. Unfortunately, didn’t get to meet the man.

Absolutely. About ten years ago I cleaned the Moraine filters in my Holley, got distracted, and forgot to tighten up one of the fuel fittings. I fired her up and revved it some just to enjoy the sound of my handiwork and then got out to look under the hood. Gasoline was quickly filling up the crevices of my intake manifold and heading to a spill over on to the primary pipes. It was a very close call and I remember it like it was yesterday.%/

Yeah, I had something very similar. The fuel bowl screws needed tightening after a few cycles. I started it up and walked away for a minute. Came back to the same scene as you, a manifold full of fuel!
