RIP-Billy Andrews

It is with a heavy heart that I post the passing of Billy Andrews (HRE) on April 20th, who finally succumbed to the cancer he so valiantly fought. I had the pleasure of interacting with Billy a number of times over the years, and his knowledge and skills will be sorely missed.

I last talked to Billy before Christmas. Billy was "opinionated" to put it politely, but he was very knowledgeable and shared it freely.

Very sad news.

I got to know Billy last year on a few visits to his shop. On one occasion, I had my son with me, and Billy could not have been more gracious with his time and expertise.

Rest in peace, Billy. You will be missed.

He was helpful to me last Fall when we last spoke.

For some of us, that didn't know him. Could we have a little more info.? Bill, Jeff? May your tires keep spinning, RIP Billy.

Billy was HRE Automotive on Long Island: https://www.facebook.com/pages/H-R-E...61490167206651

I spent the first 50 years of my life on Long Island, and I made quite a few visits to Billy's shop over the years. He was extremely talented, and he was usually, time permitting, most generous in offering opinions and advice. His workmanship was second to none. I was unaware that he was facing that health challenge. RIP, Billy Andrews.

May he rest in peace I worked with Billy when I was at Shelby. He was a good guy good good work, and Honest.

May Bill Rest in Peace. He was patient with me and did great job on my Brothers 4000 series which needed new paint job. Always available for a question. Is anyone taking over HRE for Bill.

Billy was patient with me too. And I had a constant stream of questions for him.

As for HRE. It is shutting down. There will be no HRE without Billy....

lrodriques 05-08-2023 01:19 PM

any recommendation on a shop to do some work on my 4000 series cobra. I was waiting for opening at HRE when Bill took ill.

We will miss him

What a great guy. I worked with him on one of his last GT40 builds (he bought a CAV Mk1 through one of my businesses GT International). Out of that car he created a spectacular replica of Ken Miles’ Le Mans race car. We had many conversations over the years and he always proved to be great guy and a true gentleman. A huge wealth of knowledge went with him. We had talked about how he ought to write a book and somehow catalog his experience. I will certainly miss him.
Over decade ago I bought an ERA 289 FIA that he built back in the late 90’s. I mentioned it to him and he recalled every detail as if it was the only o e he had ever built. Amazing memory….Ended up by selling the car to a customer. I continued to maintain it during his ownership and regretted selling it. I had the good fortune to recently buy it back. I am extremely fond of that car but now with Bill’s passing, even more so. Such a huge loss for everyone.
Rest In Peace Bill.

RIP Bill Andrews. I had the pleasure of speaking with him over the phone a couple days before he passed. It was one of the coolest conversations I've had with a fellow technician. I'm working on a cobra right now that Bill had worked on in the past but couldn't due to his illness. The owner brought the car to us and told me I could reach out to him if I had any questions. I'm grateful i did. The amount of knowledge I gained in just a 20 minutes conversation was amazing. I could tell the conversation made him very happy as well. I didn't get a chance to know him well, but I'll always have that conversation to remember him by and it meant a lot to me. I'm a younger technician working at a classic/Restoration shop in CT and it drives me to a better technician every day. I love working on these older vehicles. They have character and personalities! So, thank you for your knowledge, Bill. Rest in Peace. Hope you're up there doing burnouts at the gates!

If your question is directed at CJtheTech, he has not come back onto the site since June 1st. That was his only post and it's likely he won't be back soon. If you click on his name on the above post, you'll see an option to email him directly. That might work better for you. Good luck!

Sorry for the delay. The shop has been very busy. Our shop is Amercian Metal Customs located in Danbury, CT. Give me a call and we can have a conversation about what you want done on your 4000 series. Hope to hear from you soon!
