Opinions on wire wheels
Currently my car sits on a set of Minilite-like wheels with fake spinners. They do look pretty good, but I recently ran into a new set of 15 inch Dayton wires. They were bought for a kit car project of some sort and then the builder apparently passed away. Wheels are the only things left from the project. Thinking about buying them. Anyone have opinions about or, better yet, experiences with wires?

289 replicas look best with wire wheels if it replicates a street production car. Spline drive is the only way to go! I don’t like the looks of bolt-on wire wheels.
If it’s a comp car replica, I’d use alloy wheels. All my opinion of course. Nothing wrong with Dayton wheels. Larry |
I have 72 Spoke Dayton wire wheels on my 5.0L Austin-Healey (345 hp at the crank)and have had no problems with them. The weak point is generally not the spokes, but the splines themselves. I'm pretty easy on them, no clutch dumps or burnouts, so that helps. Dayton makes "dental drive" wheels that are more likely to stand up to more aggressive driving. On a Cobra, the original style "Cobra-laced" wheels will look better than the standard style wire wheel. Many complain about how hard they are to clean, but I've found cleaning with Meguiars Hot Wheel cleaner for chrome wheels makes it pretty simple. You'll also need to figure out how to mount the spline drives on your car. Good luck with the transformation, they do look nice on a 289 car.

Dayton Wires
As most of you know I have a wheel 'Fetish' ;) A terrible/wonderful thing to have  Other than driving our Cobras, to me nothing is more fun than polishing the wheels. I've owned a JCF 289 street with 15"x6" Dayton bolt-on's. 99% of the pubic didn't realize they were bolt on, with the knockoffs. Keeping them clean was another thing all together, buy Organic or Ceramic pads, less dust. If I would have kept the street 289, I thought of buying a set of Torque Thrust just to change the look once in a while, nothing wrong with having 2-sets of wheels. . Raise the car to sitting height, turn on some vintage 'Rock & Roll' and the 3-4 hours just fly-by :) But that's just me ;) Pictures wouldn't load today ??? Cheers Tom.

Personal preference but I don’t like the looks of the wheel hub on the dental drive. It’s got to be Rudge spines for me! Stronger I’m sure, just not my cup of tea.
