Heater controls on Mk III Roadster and Windscreen Washer pump
G'Day Fellow Cobra Addicts
I some of you will already know have been planning to change my dash to a Mk III Roadster design and just continuing to do my homework before pulling the trigger on this. Focusing on period correct switches and knobs atm, I have two questions I can't answer as yet. 1/ The original Mk III Roadster dash has a 2 speed toggle for the heater fan however where is the switch/knob for opening the heater valve itself? Can't seem to find it anywhere on the dash. 2/ I can source pretty much all the original knobs/lights form 'Period Correct' in Manchester, Missouri. Is there anyone else that can supply these authentic switches/knobs? 3/ Where is the 'High beam' switch incorporated? Especially with the old VW turn signal unit that only has the simple HB flash button. Appreciate your help guys/gals Best Regs from Oz |
"....with the old VW turn signal unit that only has the simple HB flash button."
This is an indication that you have an electrical issue. The button on the indicator stalk should toggle the high beam on and off, not just flash them. Blas |

What year VW indicator switch was used in the Cobras then if it has a toggle switch in the stalk for the high beam and how would you then flash the HB? Would you have a picture of one? Best Regs from Oz |
Hey there,
Well I will add my 2 cents here as others will I am sure. The button on the old VW type turn switch was used to activate a hi /low switching relay in a VW same as a lot of new cars. So if you want to go that route it should be easy to find a relay. However I believe in the Cobra it is used as the horn switch and the foot operated hi /low headlight switch is mounted on a bracket to the left of the clutch pedal also how it was done in many older cars. As for the heater valve it is a manually operated tap / valve on the intake manifold where the heater hose attaches and the switch on the dash really only does control the fan. I am building an early 289 style roadster and have been sourcing most of my Lucas style knobs and switches from moss motors. The latter 289s had off the shelf 60's Ford stuff and then the 427's went back to the British stuff. So if you want it "correct" Moss motors might be the answer for you too. Just my 2 cents :) . |

Just my 2 cents :) FANTASTIC, that's a couple of dollars worth not just 2 cents :) Sorts out allot of my queries. Of course the footwell switch!! I had this in my own first car however had no idea the Cobra's used these. For the Mk III Roadster however I know the horn was a push button on the dash so I think the earth switch on the stalk could be used to trigger an on/off relay for the HB as suggested earlier. Would be great to have this confirmed by a Mk III owner. If above is correct then the only question left is did the Cobra Mk III also have a 'HB Flash' button or do they simply toggle the HB on/off using the stalk button for flashing? One final point, did the Mk III Roadster's have a handbrake warning light? Thanks again Old Willy ! Best Regs from Oz |
No problem,
just trying to help. The other thing I forgot to mention is the button on the dash is the switch for the wiper washer pump. I guess you could use that for the horn and something else for the washer pump and have a high beam flash option, the original cars never had it but if you want that , do it. It's your car after all :) I am trying t keep mine looking period correct too but there are also a couple of options I am quietly adding such as 4 way flashers  They were never in an original 289 but I do kind of like them for potential safety reasons. I have a couple of other "mod-con" wants but we will see if I can hide them enough to keep the look I want. Cheers, Hudson |
Apparently I don't need a seperate HB flash for an 87 Car so just need the HB on/off. Now I can use the VW turn signal indicator for HB on/off via a 5-pin relay and have the horn as a button on the dash along with the windscreen water pump dash button which is already present. This is just how the original MK IIIs were set up.
