Thanks Tim,
I do remember it, I will need to pay more attention this next time. I plan on stopping by to see you all next month. Scott S |
Scott,
I don't think that any 427s (at least those brought into the USA) had wire wheels. The street 289 cars used Dunlop wires. We use wheels from British Wire Wheels, made by either Dunlop or Dayton British Wire Wheel |
Just checking in again for more opinions, have to make up my mind soon.

Re: Who has built a Street Version?

I think the street versions are great.
I am seriously thinking about the street version for a couple of reasons. 1) They look great 2) The wife might enjoy it more with undercar exhaust (we'll get back to this one) 3) Evan is is right -- the 428 would be correct and I do not see the need to spend big bucks on a 427. 4) Will not be able to afford putting it on the track, so why not make it look the part of a street car. 5) Opens up the possibility of getting a 289 that would be destined for track purposes (wife will understand after being so good to her with no load sidepipes. :JEKYLHYDE **) %/ ) |
if you want to build a street version, you don't necessarily have to include all street type characteristics. You can combine both street and S/C characteristics.
The street CSX's had a different dash layout, with a glove box. They had smaller wheel flares, no stripes, bumpers, a smaller gas cap that was mounted onto the body instead of the dished area on the rear fender with the LeMans type gas cap. They had different wheels, sunburst type that I think no one is reproducing at this time. No roll bar or scoop. They had smaller brakes. Under the car exhaust. For example, if you build your car with under the car exhaust, bumpers, and no scoop, roll bar, or stripes, it still would look street even if it had the lemans type gas cap and S/C dash layout. |
Scott,
I don't think there is any such thing as a "sleeper" Cobra! Go with your instincts on this! All the Best, Mike |
i am having my superformance cobra 1410 turned into a street cobra. it came without sidepipes which i hated anyway. i had the rollbar removed and the holes filled. just got the scoopless hood which is being installed now. it should be done in time to take to knotts in april. its royal blue and has the 351/427 stroker engine.

Jerry, post some pics for us when that puppy is finished.

I too began conveting my NAF last fall to a Street vesion . The first order of business was a ss under car exhaust (see my reply to southernfriedcj's posting) . I have glassed over the hood scoop , removed the roll bar and glassed over the holes , glassed over the sidepipe openings and glassed over the competition fuel filler hole (which was't even close to being in the "original" location) replaceing it with a locking street cap from Europa Spares.
The car is now in for paint (65 Rangoon Red) - no stripes. Should be done end of May. Next is to convert the dash to a street dash with glove compartment. The hard part will be swapping the Mustang II steering column for the VW column for that "original" look. And Lyn Parks has helped me with a special set of knock off hub adapters to fit - and this is the cool part - a set of Sunburst wheels which I found at a fair price a couple of years ago. I'll run my PSE's for a while while I decide on bigger brakes before doing the Sunburst conversion. Greg |
Bringing it back to the top...
I have made up my mind, if I can wedge the undercar exhaust in it's going to be a "street" model.
And the wife has given up her request for purple.%/ Scott S |
Mr. Bob Putnam and the rest of the group:
Mr Mackey no longer owns ERA 561 Street version.. I do. The reason why this was purchased was because I drove an original BRG 67 Cobra that was exactly like this. To this day I recalled every moment in the original car..ERA 561, doesn't have sunburst wheels of the original, but is almost an exact duplicate of the original car of 33 years ago..Coincidentally, while performing my due diligence on ERA 561,it was discovered that Peter Portante of ERA bought the original Cobra that I drove and almost purchased 33 years ago..He purchased the original many, many years later from the same person that was selling it when I drove it. It was like a homecoming when I discovered who owned the original car that I drove long, long ago. I still regret not purchasing the original when I had the opportunity in 1970. It's a small world when it comes to "real" Cobras Anyway, ERA 561 is definitely a departure from the SC version. It is very hard to distinguish from an original..The SC versions with the scoop, stripes, outside exhaust and roll bar are very common in the world of Cobras..Those who have a great deal of knowledge about Cobras know how many real SC versions were produced.. Hence the question: IS IT REAL? The street version is less common in the replica world and I have had more positive comments about this vehicle..Besides, I can carry on a conversation with a passenger, not smell of exhaust fumes, not suffer any hearing impairment and not get "bit" from the pipes while exiting or entering the vehicle.. Also, I have been advised that the under car exhaust has either the same restriction or is less restrictive than the outside exhaust.. When queried about why people want the outside exhaust, the response was: THEY WANT THE LOOK! Don |
My wifes boss has a green SPF here in NC.. it is a real sweet car. has a 351 crate motor .. sounds great
|
I once bought Peter Portante a lunch!
ERA HAS a West coast representative. It just is NOT official. It is volunteer work. TURK |
Turk,
Peter has been known to accept free lunches.. Don. |
Turk, you da man! There is a philanthropic core under that tough Gashole exterior.

Hey, I'm glad to find out there is a cult within the cult. I was starting to think I was the only person who preferred the street look. I have been scouring Cobra want ads on line for over a year and have only seen a small handful of replicas done up as street cars. There was a gorgeous blue SPF on Ebay yesterday (maybe still there today) that I'd seen for sale a few months ago on Cobra Country. I've seen one from FFR and of course, that drop-dead BRG ERA somebody posted on this thread. My two cents: good choice Scott!

I'm building one now
I wanted undercar exhaust because I have small children and live in a fairly quiet neighborhood. But I also want to do on track events and a buddy of mine who teaches driving schools says I need equal protection for both passengers, so I had ERA make me 2 black roll bars. I also think I'm going to put on the hood scoop for cooler air for the engine. If you combine the following pictures you will see where I'm headed.

Would it be difficult to convert a street car to an S/C or an S/C back to a street version ? The street car looks great.
Conway |
S/C cars had hood scoops, rollbars, exhaust pipes that exited THRU the body, and sidepipes. Street cars didnt have the above-mentioned parts....I think!
