oil pressure question
I just changed the oil in my Cobra and gained about 10 pounds of oil pressure. All I did was change from a Fram oil filter to a K&N oil filter. I used the same 20-50 Valvoline Racing oil that I have used since 1976. I used to have about 50-55 pounds pressure after an oil change and now I have 65 pounds. Is there something different about the K&N filter that would cause this.The oil is flowing as the filter got warm and I also checked the level and it had gone down just a little from filling the filter. It is getting late so I never drove the car far but the temperature did get up to around the normal 180 as it is cool here. Normally on a Summer day, air temperature 110-115 degrees I run about 35 pounds of oil pressure at idle after the car is hot. Am I missing something obvious or does the filter make that much difference ?

This subject has been addressed over and over. Many studies have shown the Fram filters to be inferior to Wix, Mobil1 and others. Go to Yahoo and enter "oil filter comparison". I would be careful about using racing oils. They are designed to protect racing engines under racing conditions. I won't take on the 20W-50 viscosity but I can tell you where I live using heavy oil with an oil cooler at street speeds would be tough on an engine. Asking cold, heavy non-synthetic oil to navigate all the plumbing of a Cobra engine can be cruel. When I got my Cobra I replaced the Castrol 20W-50 with Mobil1 5W-30 and the pressure increased (a lot). I figure it got through the plumbing, filter and cooler more easily. Bob |

Thanks for the reply. I have looked at the oil filter comparisons and that is why I changed and quit using the Fram filter. I know the people that built my motor told me it should run around 60-70 pounds cold but it never did after I went to the Fram. I was just surprised that the K & N filter made that difference. As for the oil, that is what the people that built the motor used and told me to use. I have had this motor since 1996 and never a problem. It started out to be an all out racing engine and then I changed my mind and had them tone it down a lot but it is all balanced, blue printed and ported. We had a nice day here today and I went for a drive. The temp.was around 64 degrees and that is rare for here in January. I am sure from the news that you have worse weather than that right now. Anyone using this one? www.system1filter.com PS What were the results of the comparison? It does not post. I stopped using Fram in the 70's.. Did not like it then either. Anyone compare the Ford racing filter? The FL-1A is junk |
