Fuel Filler Orientation?

I got my Gas cap from Finishline today and plan on cutting the hole and mounting it this week end. My body has the recess moulded into the right rear guard already so I just need to cut the hole and drill for the bolts.

One thing I'm not sure on is which way around it should go? I've seen some that flip forward others that flip inward and others halfway between. What is the correct orientation for the cap? is there a correct/prefered direction for it to flip open?

Cheers

Correct..

Mike...
...if by "correct orientation", you mean what was 'original', the answer appears to be: "...anyway it fits"

I have seen the hinge at just about every possible orientation on S/Cs and Comp cars.

The most common orientation is "east-west', with the cap either hinging inward or outward...or, like the very earliest 427 pictures, it is shown hinged on a diagonal, with the cap hinge pointing towards the rollbar.

I think putting the hinge at 11 o'clock works the best. That way the cap is out of your way when you are fueling the car.

I installed mine with the hinge towards the trunk edge. I worked really hard to recess it down into the fender so the profile is smooth. This looks good and the cap flips out of the way. But, my cap has a pretty sharp edge on the release lever and if you catch it while walking by the car, it can hurt. I'm going to round it off next time I take it off.

Check out the third picture in my gallery.

Original

1965 photos have proven the latch is outboard and the cap flips from east to west.

Thanks Guys,

I think I'll set it up east west flipping towards the trunk edge. Looking at the base it has 6 bolts so I can turn it to 10-11 O'Clock if I don't like the east west config.

Cheers
