When I worked on jets in the early '70's, they had no protective coating on the skin, even made a few replacement panels when damage occurred. There are some aluminum semi-trailers in the area ,but I don't know if any of them are tankers, but some of the others are and they are extremely shiny:) . Aluminum (and I'm no expert, just years of experience with aluminum motorcycle parts) is like any surface, as you get it polished it has less and less microscopic rough areas, it's those areas that invite oxidation so after initial polishing it usually doesn't take as much to keep it up.

Steven,
You are correct about the aircraft outer skin surfaces being coated with nearly pure aluminum (aprox. .005" thick) over alloyed aluminum to minimize oxidation. Al-clad is the correct trade name for that type of exterior skin material (although there may be others as well) and I believe it's manufactured by Reynolds or Alcoa. Mike :MECOOL: |
According to the experts all sanding should be by hand and uni-directional. I think that a random orbit sander would do a fine (and fast) job up to 1000 grit. Then you could move up to 1500 grit by hand to finish the job.

I've been inspired to get out my Kirby vacuum cleaner and "polish" it. When it was new it was SO nice and shiny, now it's a dull gray.
....Kirby is likely as close as I'll get to Kirkham (but mine is a REAL Kirby). LOL Ernie |
Big Ern, a Kirby? You're stuck in the 60's, my maid tells me "central vac" is the only way to fly. Whatdaya vacum over there anyway? Pineapple pollen and lava dust?;)
|
I lived on Oahu as a Marine brat until'62,loved it, beautiful place to be a kid (at least then). Was that real Kirby a roller and is it a Big motor or small motor?:)
|
Don't knock the Kirby, it's a bad a$$ machine.

Sorry to get this back on subject, but I would highly recommend that you NOT use a random orbital sander.... Personal experience showed me that even a light once over with one (in just a small area- thank god) results in hours of extra work getting rid of those non-conforming sanding marks. Pat :) |
Central vac is greeeeeaaaaaattttt!!!!! Especially since I put a down tube between the cars so I could hook up a hose and vac the cars out in about a nano-second.
But we got cats and the two Labs---so the big badassed Kirby still makes regular appearences. Nothing sucks like a Kirby... |
