Does anyone know who sells a 15:1 or 16:1 modified Mustang II Power Rack?

What do you mean...modified?
DV |
It seems the stock Mustang II's rack is 20:1 or so (4.15 turns lock to lock) I'm looking for (2.5 to 3.0 turns lock to lock)
|
You want that quick of rack and want it power too!
Are you nuts! :) Yes, we have such a rack. Call and ask for Jay at 740-852-5280 DV...are you sure you want it that quick? |
Maybe you can explain this to me. Maybe I just don't get it.
I drive a 1999 Corvette with 350 HP aluminum V8, huge tires and 2.66 lock to lock power steering. (16:1 ratio) It's a pleasure to drive, I love the quick steering response and awesome handling. The car is also very short wheelbase. (104.5 inches) and it's not that heavy, about 3200 lbs So why is it that everyone says that power steering is too much for the Cobra? How does it matter that it only weighs 2500 lbs, when it has a 460 over the front wheels? My 1991 Civic with manual slow (3.75 turns lock to lock) is a pain to drive, no steering response and sooo heavy when manuvering at low speeds and much lighter than the Cobra with a 1.5 liter 4 banger under the hood. . . . What am I missing? |
Hey Rob, how's it going bud? We've got to get together over the next few weekends to scout Valley Forge again.
Compared to the Cobra, your 'Vette has the wheelbase of a school bus. The Cobras' wheelbase is about a foot shorter, and the car weighs about 1000lbs less. It's SO MUCH easier to make the car change directions. Like I said, my car originally had the stock Mustang power steering rack, and it was nuts. No joke, sneezing hard enough would make me change lanes. This is because with the power steering, it was far too easy to turn the wheel, and any slight movement of your hand would move the wheel. With such short wheelbase and light weight, the car went where it was pointed. Like I said, I changed to the Flaming River 18:1 rack. That is 4 turns lock to lock. If you never race the car, it will be fine for the street. As I mentioned to you, I hate the rack, I can't wait to get it out. But that's because I can't race it like I want. I will put in a 15:1 manual rack. Putting power assist on a rack that quick will be suicide. Trust me, and other owners, and ESPECIALLY DV, the effort required to park a manual steering Cobra isn't that bad. You'll be happy to have the trade off. Hey DV, what's this rack you guys sell? I'm dying to rip the 18:1 Flaming River out of my car. I literally can't steer fast enough with it on the autox course. I've got to get mine out. Steve |
Klayfish,
When I retire do you want to become DV II, DV Jr, or heck you can be DV! I couldn't have explained it better. Guys we are a Flaming River dealer. They now have three different racks available along with their new power rack. Beware what you ask for! It IS quick! DV PS Rob(?) we had power steering in our last DV II Cobra, 3100 lbs to meet SCCA requirements. The best suspension we could muster, 94" wheel base and 640 plus horsepower. With a "Semi-Professional driver....he had us take the rack out. It WAS to quick for street driving. |
I auto-cross about 10 times a year and was going to switch my manual mustang 2 rack to power. I race with 17" x 9" cobra R
wheels & slicks. This set-up is a monster to drive around the cones. Am I on the right track? Should I stay with a manual rack with a different ratio? Jay |
You might want to send Rick Lake an email or see if he replies to this post. He has a power rack in his ERA and loves it (although it makes Peter P. at ERA cringe). I'm not sure what the specs of his setup are, but I'm sure he'd be happy to tell you.

OK you guys,
I have a '93 Mustang GT 15:1 power rack in my E-M and love it for both the street and the hot laps at the track. If you're used to an Expedition you'll need to make a large, economy sized adjustment or you'll turn 300 feet before you need to  Once the adjustment to the brane(sp :JEKYLHYDE ) cells is made, just think "right turn" and you're doing it! At first it seemed twitchy, but now all other cars feel like UPS trucks with manual steering. One possibly important factor: I use a 1993 Mustang PS pump. If you use the Saginaw pump, you may want to get the pressure reducer kit %/ Enjoy, Tom |
When I built my car I mistakenly thought I wanted the quickest rack I could get. I put in a 1980 Mustang power unit with the "sport" ratio. This, combined with the small diameter steering wheel, made steering effort plenty high, though not unpleasant for me. The car is also a little "twitchy," as a result. This is partly due to the 90" wheelbase. I would also note that, after making a turn, a certain amount of steering wheel return rotation is necessary to cancel the blinking turn signal. My ratio is so fast that the column sometimes doesn't rotate enough to cancel the turn signal lever back to neutral. Then I look even more like an old geezer, driving around with a signal flashing. I put in a loud flasher, but the car is too loud for me to hear it blinking. A slower, non-power rack is on the to-do list-no big deal, just a shame I threw away the time and money.

Dirty Harry,
You have self-cancelling turn signals ???   Tom **) |
What's the story on self canceling turn signals, I thought this was standard on steering columns. . . .?
|
Sure, mine "self cancel". When someone honks or flashes at me, then I cancel them myself. :JEKYLHYDE
Rob, a lot of columns used do not have self cancelling. Mine doesn't. It isn't a big deal, you get used to it. Steve |
