Rare Photos of Shelby American circa 1963-65
Thought members would like to see a couple of interesting pics of the SAI facility at their last digs (LAX). The other one is of CSX 2287. I had not seen this one before. Both photos are compliments of the Remington Archives.

THE GUY PAINTING, DO YOU KNOW HIS NAME? AT SAAC27 A GUY CAME UP TO RICH AND KEPT STARING AT THE FLIP. HE SAID HE WAS THE SHELBY AMERICAN PAINTER AND HAD PAINTED THE CAR WHEN MILES WAS DONE. HE WAS "LIFTED" INTO THE CAR AS HE WANTED A PICTURE, AT THAT POINT RICH TOOK HIM FOR A RIDE. HE CAME BACK WITH THE BOB HAMPTON GRIN. I VISITED WITH HIM FOR AWHILE AS WE DISCUSSED THE FIBERGLASS FITS ON '67 GT500'S AS I WAS RESTORING MINE AT THE TIME. HE WAS A WEALTH OF INFO, ESP. ON GETTING THE HOOD BOWS OUT THAT MY BODY SHOP HAD GIVEN UP ON. AWH, ITS THE OLD TIMERS WHO WERE THERE THAT REALLY HAVE THE ANSEWERS, GUYS LIKE PHIL. |
Reminds me of my first real job as a body man/ painter for body shop inc. straight laquer ,no respirator. pack a day and all the rainier you could drink between noon and twelve thirty . oh yea and a buck sixty-five an hour.

Is that the Pacific Ocean in the Back Ground???
The aerial shot has been reversed! The photographer is facing west. The light colored ground near the horizon is the sand dunes adjacient to Dockweiler beach.

I believe the painter is Robert "Tweety" Aldredge. He was the painter and body man back in the sixties. He is a great source of info and stories. He is still painting and restoring in Largo Fl.

Stan is right. I mistakenly flipped the picture the wrong way when I was scanning it into my computer.
Big Bob Evans has corrected me on the Daytona, although I thought Phil said it was 2287. Bob doesn't remember 2287 having the white stripes in any pic he has seen. Any help? |
2287 had stripes in the pics at Bonneville.

A bunch of us talked with Tweety at SAAC--what a gentleman. He was the one the one who said there was no one true blue--it's whatever he mixed up on any given day--no specific recipe.:3DSMILE:
Stan--and I thought those dunes were the LA version of the "grassy knoll":LOL: I thought that pic looked alittle funny--I wasn't looking out at the distance like you were--I just never remembered hangers on the southend of Imperial. That assplains it.;) Cal--great pics, as usual!:3DSMILE: |
I remember as a wide eyed 19 year old rushing to LA from Central California in the middle of the night, driving the wheels of of my MG1100 to meet a prior girlfriend (you know what I mean)who was vacationing at the Balboa Yacht Club in Southern California. I recall seeing a building next to the Freeway that said SHELBY AMERICAN almost stopped dead in my tracks. I think it was at a location after the one pictured???

That Could of Been Shelby's Goodyear Warehouse

Shelby's Goodyear warehouse on Figueroa Blvd. is really close to the Harbor Freeway (110 - used to be called 11) in an unicorporated area of Los Angeles. The SAI LAX facility was about 2 miles west of the San Diego 405 Freeway. I'll bet that's the building you saw. Jamo, I kmow those are sand dunes because I used to watch filming of the television show "Rat Patrol" there. They were probably just doing retakes - and they had to wait for airplanes, but those are the closest sand dunes to Hollywood. |
Cal: Thanks for the photos. Ah. If I could only go back in time for 24 hours. I'll take the one in the paint booth please!
