Thinking outside the box
Just a thought, what would it take for cobra owners club to collectively form an insurance company or group underwrite its members?
The club could enforce safety restrictions, inspections, etc. and have collective bargining power with underwiters. With say 20,000 members at $1k/year its a 20 million dollar blanket policy - not huge but perhaps significant enough to attract the attention of underwriters (or a group of them to share the risk). Don't have my Cobra yet - but after spending 50K or more it would be kinda nice to be able to drive it - and personally I would feel safer if other senior owners/mechanics had looked it over. %/ |

I've been following this thread since it started and between reading all of this, and speaking to my insurance agent, I'm starting to get depressed.
I have been a customer of Farmers Ins. for well over a decade. I have EVERYTHING insured through them including: House, lake house, boat, 3 cars, wifes rings, a couple watches, stereo / home theater equip. etc....... In the past I have insured cars like: 95 ZR1, 89 IROC w/ 383 Lingenfelter, 69 Z-28, 69 L-89 Vette, and a 70 Chevelle SS with a blown 502 w/ 800+HP. NEVER a problem with the insurance company! I called my agent when I was looking at SPF last November and told him I was considering getting a Cobra replica and wanted a quote. He told me they wouldn't touch it! Called me back later with a quote from another company (one they use / recommend for "these types" of vehicles) and he told me it would be "around 600 bucks" and that there was a '3000 mile limit". I said "that's great, thats not too bad at all!". Then he said............ "per quarter". I said "what!!!!!!!!!!??????" He said the good part was, I could take it off (perhaps keep comp) during the winter months and put it back on in the spring. (Big deal?) This is a car that I will drive on the weekends (if it's nice out) and take to an occasional show. I hear a lot about "specialty Ins. companies" who will insure Cobra's at a decent rate, but has anyone had a claim with them? Heck, I may start looking at Vette's again. A nice 66 w/ a 427 would look nice in the garage.............good investment............and insuralbe too! I am NOT happy!   |
Don't settle for a hose job!
Don't despair, there are plenty of "reasonable" companies that will insure your Superformance especially with your high performance ownership track record. I heard the same dance with our first SPF and when I shopped around, there were plenty of agents that were willing to write a policy. They were so good that I even insured our Eurospec'd Porsche 930 Turbo with them.;)
