MSD Distributor w/puke tank on FE?
I'm about to order a new distributor, and am leaning toward the MSD for my 427. I read somewhere that there may be interference between the MSD distributor and the cooling system puke tank on the front of an FE intake manifold. Anyone have first hand experience with this? Thanks in advance.

There is no interference at all. I have had my MSD dist and the expansion tank mounted with the inlet port located on both the drivers side and the passenger side without any problem. When you order your distributor be sure and order a steel distributor gear. Also, I understand the Ready to Run distributor is available now for the FE engine. I used this set up on my small block and Bereally liked it. You will also need to change out the springs on the advance that is shipped on your distributor. MSD will send you three other sets of springs so use the lightest ones so your distributors advance will come in correctly.

I have heard conflicting reports on this. I have heard from some that there is interference with an MSD distributor and the expansion tank.
However, I called Bill Parham at Southern Automotive and figured I'd ask him since he is building my motor with an MSD dist. and an expansion tank and he said there will be no interference at all. The only thing I can think of is that it may depend on your expansion tank- I think some people may modify them so they sit lower to clear the hood and then you might have problems with the dist. |
I'm using the MSD Pro-Billet distributor, and the expansion tank came from Finish Line. This is my second tank. The first one I bought as a kit and after assembly, it did rest against the distributor cap. I ground the edge for clearance and caused a leak. I then purchased an assembled tank, which fit further to the passenger side, however, I still am unable to rotate the distributor. If the lip around the tank can be bent slightly, then that will solve the problem. Hope that helps.

I have the ...........
MSD Pro-billet distributor and an expansion tank that was shortened 1" and everything fits fine. No clearance issues what so ever. There is a picture of my set up in my gallery.

MSD just came out with a new cap with a smaller diameter that will clear tight clearance areas. It also uses the superior pole style spark plug towers. The only thing I don't like is that it is bright red

I also have the MSD FE distributor and stock Ford [lowered
1" ] tank.. Works fine....Steve McD |

Is there anything U guys can't answer or come up with a solution for?! I am constantly amazed at the willingness to share and make stuff easier for the next guy down the road. CLASS! CLASS! CLASS! Jerry |
Hi I had to machine an 1/2 spacer to clear my MSD on my shelby motor. I have a single plane Dove intake for MR heads. I could not rotate the distrubutor and it would just clear the tank If you set it up correctly and get the timing right, you should not have to do alot of adjustment. Good Luck Rick Lake

You can index the msd in any of 360 degree positions. If the little window hits your tank take it out and turn it 45 degrees.. Reset the rotor to where it was when you started. No problem

The cap your looking for is MSD part number 8433. It has the HEI type terminals.....and no window on the side ala GM caps...you also need to use an MSD pn 8467 rotor. Good luck!

Like Rick Lake I had to fabricate a spacer so the MSD distributor wouldn't hit the puke tank.
The original tanks did not hit the distributor but the new one I got did...but then again the new one didn't leak every 900 miles like the originals did. You do want to be able to rotate the distributor. |
Thanks for all the replys. This forum Rules! You guys constantly reinforce my belief in the good of the common man!
