Ron61, It is likely that at some point I will have a car built out of state, certainly not in Hawaii. Then I would like to DRIVE it to Calif for shipping, which means by the time I hit Hawaii it will all be ready be registered some where else.

I gotta research Hawaii very closely before I make a move on anything!

Meat- Do you have to pay tax on used parts purchased on the internet?? My DMV said no.

Parts are taxable, labor is not. New or used, it doesn't matter. I just bought some used parts for my M40 project and I had to pay tax on these parts.

I would assume that would be a use tax Vs. sales tax. I think the tax rates are the same??

Oh, and sales and use tax are apparently the same rate(s) in California. I don't know that for certain, but that's how the state explains it. The same state that's not responsible for it's own oversight. So, take that for what it's worth...

My only point and I believe others, in stating that if the Cobra Mikee is purchasing from out of state already has a legitimate registration from that state, it should be and can be registered in California as any other used car purchased out of state. I agree that if the registration states a 1965 Ford, it certainly was not for the Cobra originally, but that registration comes with the car. I'm not advocating that Mikee do anything illegal, but if the current registration is legal as far as he's concerned, I think he's better off than going through DMV, CHP for inspection, certification, etc. As far as going to another state to register it first, this happens frequently all the time. The Cobra he's purchasing may have originated from another state other than Michigan.

Well, your point is wrong and could get Mikee's car impounded, and Mikee thrown in the hoosgow, and separate Mikee from his money, plus alot more of his money besides.

Just because someone from some other state incorrectly registered a car, using a VIN number that - if it came off of a 1965 car - is in violation of a federal and state penal code or several, that does not in any way mean that Mikee should risk everything he has worked for in his life on some bad advice...like illegally registering a car in California.

The DMV is VERY aware of kit cars. They regularly inspect out-of-state cars sporting questionable registration. The CHP inspection stations refer kit cars (like Cobras...especially like Cobras!) to the DMV inspector fellas. The DMV guys carry badges, guns and the power of the State of California to impound and get people arrested.

You are clearly advocating that Mikee do something illegal. He knows it's not a 1965 car. He knows it's not a Ford. He has to sign paper - under penalty of perjury - declaring all kinds of stuff about the car. Ignorance isn't a defense. And, clearly, Mikee knows that the car isn't what it says it is, so there is no way in Hell that he could even come close to being ignorant about the car...The DMV monitors alot of different forums, and they are in no way ignorant of what is said here. During the DMV Alvarez days, I got to sit in on some of the meetings between DMV inspector Alvarez and various owners. He had pages from the forums in his folder. I'll bet that if Mikee attempts to register the car, and when - not if - he has to meet DMV inspector Nichols about his car, the inspector will have these pages in his file.

He is absolutely not 'better off' following your advice. Absolutely not. No way. No how.

As far as going to another state to register it first, that does not happen frequently (or all the time). It's title washing. It's illegal. It's jail time. Don't do it.

Do not follow the advice of someone who has not registered a kit car under SB100. SB100 is the LAW. That is how you register a car in California. Period. If Mikee needs ANY help registering his car, I'll walk him through it. If he gets to meet a DMV inspector, call me. I'll go down there with him (I've met a few of them, and they're there to help...as long as you don't do any of the things recommended by Cobralee).
