I have the dual quads and love 'em. They're 600's, I believe (mine is stroked to 462).
Kris - Love that pic! Looks like mine! Keith :) |
930 cfm single on 427 cubes and NOT over-carbed.

Lew,
Reading the responses....there's no clear winner. I'll give you my 2-cents......that I prefer the single carb. Easier to tune! Do you want to run the turkey pan set-up? If that is not a requirement, go with what you want to run. Both are good. Hope it helps. - Bill - |
Kris:
CSX 3042 did not come from the factory with 2x4 barrels, somebody changed it. Could have happened very early in its life, but not originaly equiped from SAI. |

dang Ron how did you do that !
|
...not the same picture, but another shot from my files.
:D |
Jeff: There were a number of S/C's that came with dual quads originally.
I think more came with a single but dual quads for an S/C is definitely correct. No question about it. Comp cars only came with a single quad. |
Thanks for the responses so far. I understand why a sigle carb would be best for a race car. But would a twin carb set-up allow for the greater range of operation through the rpm range that is required of a street car?
|
Lew: I have dual quads. I love them. No problems at all. Engine runs great. When that secondary kicks in HOLD ON! Its a rush.
|
There is only one reason to go with dual quads: the looks. You will see at most a 10 hp difference between a single 4 barrel and dual quads and no drivability differences. This is assuming both set ups are tuned correctly.
|
Evan:
Can you tell me where yu got the information from? Why would SAI replace the single 4 barrel and intake manifold from a comp. car (all s/c's started life as a comp. car correct?) and repace it with two 4 barrels? Cost more money and made less hp. I could see this happening once or twice, but it was nowhere near the norm. |
Jeff,
I think it was in late 65 shelby had a parking lot full of race cars he couldn't sell, most without engines ,he re labled them SC and put whatever engine and carb combo he had available in them and sold em. Ive got a picture somewhere of a lot full of those cars obviously w/o engines.............just cant put my finger on it. I'll bet puterworks or turk or someone has it though. Karl |
Found it
From" Shelby Cobra Gold portfolio" ( picture of about 30 unfinished competition cobras out in an airport lot) When it was realized that the required 100 427 cars wouldnt be built in time for the FIA inspection ,AC was sent word to begin building street cars. The race cars sat behind Shelby American to be completed as they were sold. When it was realized that the market for 427 competion Cobras was glutted the cars were offered as s/c 's the " street competition " model. As standard equipment it came with ; rear fender flares, oil cooler scoop, side exhaust competition, fuel filler, roll bar, hood scoop, brake scoops, oil cooler ,quick jacks, [ 427 medium riser, with dual 4 bbl carbs ] ( although some had single 4 bbl carb) also battery mounted behind passenger seat ,a differential cooler,a 42 gallon gas tank, front sway bar, and 3.77:1 rear gears I also think the range of extra horses from the 2x4 is 25 to 40 Karl |
Amazing. The market being glutted with less than 100 cars. Times were indeed tough. When my parents moved to L.A. after WWII, there were no freeways, no hi rises, and a whole lot less people. They were offered a chance to buy some property at a great price a morning's drive south of Pasadena, but my folks figured no one would ever live in a place called Balboa Island.

You learn something everyday. Thanks guys.

Ron
Thanks for the close up. What I wanted to see was where you had the linkage hooked up in the rear carb. My old old r motor from the sixties in a galaxy had different linkage all mechanical. Which springs you runing in the secandary vacume pots? thanx |
Jeff: KobraKarl beat me to the punch. There are also other sources which document that some S/C's also originally came with dual quads.
As far as performance. There is not much of a difference and for track work a single is probably preferable. The only real advantage of dual quads is LOOKS. And thats enough for me! |
There is no debate about the WOW factor of 2 4s, but I went a single 4 b/c I wanted something that was more maintenance free. How difficult is it to tune (and keep tuned) 2 4's. ?
p.s. Evan, check your private messges. |
Chaplin,
There is a short learning curve to tuning 2x4's but once adjusted they are as stable as one. They DO starve on a hard right hander unless the floats are set high. and fuel economy really sucks! If you went racing it wouldnt be a good setup and even with my limited experience I can see why they used only one for the track However they do breath better and give more horses (see Dragon snake) karl |
