CSX-2227 Longest owned original Cobra

In the March issue of Mustangs Plus they have an article about Hank Williams and his 1965 289 Cobra. He ordered it in December 1964 and took deleivery in January 1965. Total cost was $6,500 dollars. He has drag raced it, road raced it, and every other type of racing per the article and he has won almost 400 trophies at car shows. It was in the Queen Mary Show at Long Beach and won this time. He is the longest original owner of one of the original Cobras.

Met Hank at SAAC-27; he is omnipresent at just about every Cobra event.
The car is splendid and, after 38 years, he is just as enthusiastic about owning it as the day he got it.
He has a great plate: "NO KIT"

I always wondered.....

He don't look too much like the Hank Williams I know.

He sang "Your Cheatin' Heart"??????

Damn...his son (Hank Jr.) looks nothing like him. **) **) %/

Technically, the longest original owner would be Carroll Shelby and CSX 2000...I don't believe it has ever left his hands.

No?

Bud,

You are correct about Shelby keeping CSX-2000. I think the article was meant for any car that was sold. They mentioned some other man that got his just a month or so after CSX-2227 and still has it.

Trivia question. Who is the longest original owner of a CSX 3000 car?

Specialk 02-25-2003 11:35 AM

Dick Smith with CSX3035??

snakeeyes 02-25-2003 11:37 AM

John Holmes?:3DSMILE: :3DSMILE: :3DSMILE:

Cal Metal 02-25-2003 11:42 AM

Actually George Harm was the original owner of CSX 3035. It was later purchased by Smith who drove for Harms.

Beat me to it Cal;)

In terms of an ultimate low mile CSX 2000 car, I visited with one of the owners of the Joe Hish Cobra at Elkhart last summer. That car had less than 12,000 original miles on it. I don't know if that is a record, but this car was pristine. He was the second owner and had owned it shortly after the first owner took delivery. They obviously trailer it everywhere, with the last 2,000 miles logged from backing on and off the car carrier.

bittentoo 02-25-2003 01:33 PM

Snakeeyes,

Guess you critiqued a few of his films? How is your eye sight now?

BTW, your not trying to hy-jack this thread by chance!!!

snakeeyes 02-25-2003 01:54 PM

Huh? Oh, sorry for the poor attempt at levity. I'm a hijacker, alright.

Okay, here's my guess: Karl Schiffmayer. Better?

Cal, was the Hish car the one at the concours in Elkhart? I recall that gentleman telling us that he bought the car from a woman who purchased it as a daily driver, in New York or New Jersey...that would have made for an interesting commuter car when the roads started getting icy...

met Hank at Orange County Fair, last summer. A true gentleman, got their late. Everyone was getting ready to leave the park, when I spotted the Cobra. Spent half an hour talking to him and asking bunch of questions, and looking through his album. Can't say the same to some replica owners that I've approached to ask a question or two, acted like theire $hit don't stink. I'm glad they
aren't part of our forum. Sorry guys had to get it out.

Looks like that Exeter/Dartmouth/Cornell/Yale education track paid off for the 'ole Snakeeyes, again. Karl "Fritz" Schiffmeyer is, I think the correct answer. Actually, I was talking with Fritz at Elkhart last summer and he brought the issue up. I did a cursory check of the Registry and would have to agree. Maybe there is someone else out there, but I didn't see it.

On a side note, ever see what Hank (have met him countless times over the years) uses to haul around his Cobra........

Actually. according to the SAAC 1997 Registry, the earliest one-owner Cobra is CSX 2006 which was purchased by Herbie Hancock (yes, THAT Herbie Hancock) new from Tasca Ford in the spring of 1963. This is excluding Shelby's CSX 2000 of course.
What did I win?--J.D.

Hank's Trailer

CalMetal

I believe the small enclosed trailer that Hank used was stolen from his driveway last fall. Luckily the Cabra was not in it.
