Air Cleaner
Just wondering if anyone has found any benefit to the new K/N air cleaners w/air passage on top as well as sides? If so would that extra air flow create a slightly leaner ratio? Oh by the way I think I found the problem w/ my car stalling at high rpm, falty gas cap wasnt venting. after driving and removing gas cap it sounded like 200psi of pressure coming out. At least I learned how to adjust carb out of ordeal. Thanks for advise guys.

I asked the question about engine air flow requirements a few weeks ago. I also did a search on this subject. It seems there are Guys who are using this assembly and getting negative effects from it. Some stated that they were getting fuel being sucked up through the top of the filter, while others were not. I contacted K&N and they stated that an 11 X-Stream Assembly will flow 698 CFMS. I have a mild 302 with a 650 Holley, so that is what I wanted, so I bought one. Wether it has improved the Engine's Performance or not is yet to be tested. We will see in a few weeks when the Snow is finally gone. If it will lean your engine out or not I don't honestly know. I am still playing with jetting, so it am not concerned. George |
K+N told me you want your filter to flow 120%-140% of your carb CFM. It isn't easy to find a filter that will do it and fit under a Cobra hood. They have a 3" filter that fits the Cobra oval air cleaner and flows in the 950 cfm range. I made a drop base for my air cleaner and used this filter.

i have heard from dyno operators that the X-tream lids cause turbulence and can cost HP, don't know I don't operate a dyno all day. If you don't have room for a good diameter filter, the lid may help. Lots of variables you know. I know my motor doesn't like an aircleaner, be it pleated paper or oiled gauze, I pick up 2 tenths at the dragstrip by removing either of them. 14x3" size on mine, damned hood gets in the way or I'd have a tall one.

I think there was a discussion of this subject in a fair amount of detail a while back. I recall the gist of it was that the X-stream was beneficial if you were running without a hood scoop, or running with a "sealed chamber" hood scoop, but if you were just running an open scoop like a lot of us that it could actually create a lean condition. I may be wrong but that's my recollection; you can probably find the discussion by doing a search. At any rate, I moved my X-stream lid to my Lister, which has clearance issues requiring a 2" high filter element and does not have a scoop--
