Shelby and Factory Five.

Satanpez 03-03-2003 07:37 PM

Factory Five doesn't.

Superformance does, as does KMP and of course the REAL Shelby himself...But be prepared to spend at least 70k for the roller.

Horse 03-03-2003 07:51 PM

I know that AC used to make some- and prob still will if you pay them enough- IIRC they were about $120K?

Excaliber 03-03-2003 10:24 PM

What was that rumor about Factory Five buying some Kirkham bodies recently? Sounds like they may be "gearing up" for something!

Satanpez - That depends on who you talk to. I have seen a Factory Five with an aluminum body that came from the factory. Perhaps they are not yet available to the general public.

I heard F5 didn't find it to be a viable option for the market they are selling to.

Don't know for sure but I haven't seen any.

superformance? never heard of that. maybe they fit the AC body.

Hi-Tech formerly in Mesa, AZ used to - not to mixed up with Hi-Tech in south-africa which IS Superformance!

F5 says they aren't offering the body as an option at all.

The test car/body whatnot was sold. I believe to someone in Florida.

Steve in NJ - It is in Florida, about ten minutes from where I am now.

The OLD Hi-Tech offered a metal body? I never heard of that. I know they made a VERY accurate car in general with a LOT of aluminum panels here and there. But as far as I know they were glass bodies.

The AC Car Group Limited has recreated the original AC Cobra 427 model which is now available to special order and hundreds of man hours are spent on each vehicle to hand craft the aluminium body using original wooden jigs used by AC since 1962.
The AC Mark II 289 FIA , is the first of a limited edition, numbered COB 1001 - 1025 and is a continuation of the seven cars built in the 1960s. This historic classic is manufactured from the original jigs, bucks and tooling used for the competition cars, and is in polished aluminium. Taken from their web site below.

When Shelby came back into making Cobras he offered them in aluminum and glass. He bought the aluminum bodies from Kirkhams and you could purchase a Shelby aluminum Cobra after he doubled the price. He then found a new supplier about 2 years ago but since has just gone back to the Kirkhams for his aluminum body.

FFR had one aluminum body built and was going to try and sell it for $6,000 but found they couldn't do it. FFR will not be selling an aluminum body for the FFR.

Did someone say ALUMINUM, My company (Metal-Morphous, Inc.) Has aluminum plated both FFRs and ERAs underside of the hoods and trunks, the areas you see when the bodies is to be painted. Just another option to the expense of the solid aluminum body.

This is seamless aluminum plating on a fiberglass ERA hood.

Buzz 03-05-2003 03:35 PM

Beautiful stuff, Ron. How does the plating process work and is it possible to do an entire body? Sorry about all the questions, but how durable is the finish, how much weight would it add and how much does it cost?

Ron Randall 03-05-2003 04:15 PM

Buzz, you have mail

C'mon... don't be shy ;)
Any chance of seeing some pricing for that treatment?

Ron Randall 03-06-2003 04:43 PM

Craig we price per square foot and with more square feet the price per foot drops. We are working with one of the Cobra manufacturers on plating one of their bodies and the price is about the same as very good show paint.

I believe Mike Kenney of NOS Motorsports will build you an Aluminum one. It will be based on the Hi-Tech. He did an Aluminum body for one of SAI's customers that wanted a slabside 289.

The FFR option is long gone. I saw the car while under development. It was an interesting concept. However, it did not fit with their niche in the market.

The Saint

I'm the one you were referring to. My car was built by AC in England. Have pictures of the build and finished car in my gallery just click on the camera icon.
