oil pan clearance

how close to the ground is yours and is it a problem going in and out of parking lots. mine is 3 3/4 and would like to drop it for better hood clearance

Mr.Fixit 03-05-2003 04:01 PM

It's not the overall clearance that is as important as what part of the underside will hit the ground first. If it's you oil pan, than you are looking for trouble. I don't like having the oil sump as the scrub point.

shelby bankston 03-05-2003 04:12 PM

it's the only thing between the motor and the ground no cross members

i like that but how low is too low without something like that. myb car is new and i dont have any miles on it yet and that dammm white stuff is not gone yet thanks

STEVE POTTS 03-05-2003 06:04 PM

Shelby: I have 5.5" of clearance...never a problem in 3500= miles. Do you have a T pan? 3.75" is a bit close for me.

KobraKarl 03-05-2003 06:44 PM

Shelby ,
with a 90 " wheel base you shouldnt have too much pan trouble,(although a little is a lot) Ive found the first thing that scrubs is the oil cooler shroud

Roscoe 03-06-2003 08:18 AM

Don't know what kind of pan you have but you may want to look at those 'T' road race pans. Not as deep as a stock pan but hold 7 quarts. Lowest part on mine is the bellhousing...about 4.5"

Agro's right.......

......I'm building one out of 3/16 C/R formed on a nibbler, predrilled and coated. The local welder is charging me $38.50 for the completed piece! Sometimes it pays to live in the Sticks, especially where winter's are slow.........:JEKYLHYDE :D

i've got a canton road race pan. the motor has a air gap intake on it but its not that much taller than a standard intake and i cant hardly get my hood to latch.

I have an Aviad, so it is pretty well tucked up inside the side frame rales. I think if you drive a lot, sooner or later you will straddle some sort of road debris, a truck tire, a dead animal, or 2X4, and if you punch a hole in your pan, or develope a crack, and lose your oil and not know it, it will ruin your whole trip. I would find a way to put on a low profile sump, because sooner or later......
