Who did you loose too?

How many races have one actually lost on the street? And what kind of a car did you loose to?
My self when I was into it, lost a race to a 1977 trans-am bb 4sp. But it was not a bad loose, I was able to stay with him.
I would like to hear your experiences, good or bad.

Sorry...

No street racing allowed. To many murphy's to contend with.

I only run at the track.

A Subaru Forrester. I wasn't paying attention. It really made his day!

While out in my Cobra Saturday I passed a very nice looking 5.0 Mustang. No, we didn't race. We just passed each other, pushing in our clutches and blipping the throttles. Both cars sounded great, both drivers had wide smiles.

Somewhat of a "yo!" moment, but with exhaust notes!

... and sooooo much better than street racing!

:)

Back in 1966, before I new better, I was driving my 52 Chevy Hot Rod back from fishing around midnight. I had the fishing poles sticking out of the back window. A guy in a brand new 427 Cobra came up beside me and blipped his throttle and looked over and laughed. I know it was new because it still had temp plates. At the next light he took off and then slowed down to play with me. His girl friend or wife was next to him. At the next light we both took off fairly slowly (watching eachother to see who would punch it first). He shifted to second and we both punched it. Since I caught him in the wrong gear I left him in the dust. At the next light he wasn't laughing anymore but his girlfriend was. I gave him a wave as I turned off the street.

About 3 years later after I had my Cobra a guy in a 289 came along side and we stopped to chat. He then asked if I wanted to race him and I said no but invited him to the Cobra Club meeting. He came to the next meeting but didn't come to the the one after that. I found out later that he was killed racing and XKE on the street. He flipped the car and was pinned between the rollbar and a curb.

Well, if this counts.........

...since entrance ramps are now one of the premiere joys of owning a sporty little Cobra:LOL:, upon returning from the tip of the 'Cape ("P-town" as it's known), I decided to "launch" meself properly onto Rte. 6 West at Yarmouth (MA). I did just that and landed right in front of a large, dark blue Crown Vic with anti-sways and semi-fat tires. Instant feather (oh, heck, instant DUMP) of the throttle. Hugging to the right. Signalling like a pro...he flicks left, pulls alongside and gives me the ugly. I give him the Garfield grin back. We cruise catamaran-style, then he grins (grimaces?) and gives me the old thumbs up. He decks the CV a tad and it pulls ahead UNCONTESTED. The little Triple-R is now 2-1-0. I also agree real speed belongs on tracks---or wilderness stretches.:JEKYLHYDE :D

about all i have ever done is just a few seconds "jump" on some other car at highway speed, then immediatly on the brakes. You never know when some HP is just up the road with the radar aimed my way. Plus the extraordinary performance of these cars means that in a few more seconds, one is way over the "ton", with all the risks that entails. I too save it for the drag strip, or the long straight at VIR.

"street racing" is dangerous. Fortunately, there are very few cars that chose to challange me. Mostly, i just enjoy me driving so much i just stay away from other cars, and enjoy my own little world.

Got on the freeway ahead of a new Mustang Cobra ('03, I think). Kept looking back to see if he wanted to play...no response. Was actually in third gear, getting to cruise speed, when I saw the SOB come up and pass me from the right side, a few lanes over. I tried to keep up with him, but he had the "jump" on me. We had it up to 135, when I realized I could not catch him, and let him go. Probably made his day, and screwed my day! At least it was a Ford!!! lol !!! (I know, freeway racing is bad, and I try not to do it a whole lot.)

What is L O S I N G?? Is that like being close enough to see the guy you blew past?

Excaliber 03-18-2003 08:14 PM

Edley,,,,right,,,I'm sure you "take it easy" on the freeway every little chance you get. LOL

OK guys, I know street racing is dangerous, but the temptation is always there, and even if you state that you guys don't do it on the street every single one of you must of nailed on it once or twice. The temptation is there and definitely with this type of a caliber, like a cobra just to see how fast it really is.

But I will agree street racing is bad news.

Wild Cobra -
Seeing your signature line "drive it like you stole it!!!" I have to ask this. Is that an admonition to drive very carefully so as not to attract undue attention from law enforcement? If so, I think it's wonderful of all the people who've written that on their trucks in large letters to encourage safer driving.

TerrysSPF 03-19-2003 08:07 AM

.......hope the Insurance companies don't see this thread!

Edley Rondinone 03-19-2003 10:58 PM

TerrysSPF: I am sure the insurance companies let us do a little "bench racing" now and then!!! lol !!! You have to admit, there is a LOT of braggadocio goin' on on this site!!! Just ask Turk, or SFCJ, or Jason, or 'leenie, or Agro1, or Jamo, or Evan, or Ernie, or that Edley guy, or........well, you get the picture!!! LOL !!!
