need quick lesson in timing
Got my engine to turn over finally(it was the ground)and initially got fire, now no fire any help in correctly setting timing appreciated. chuck

Assuming the timimg chain is aligned correctly and timing marks on the dampner are correct, you need to tale the valve cover off of #1 cylinder. Watch for the intake valve to close, and continue turning the crank clockwise until #1 piston is top dead center. This should be at the 0 mark on the dampner timing marks.
Take the distributor cap off, and see which of the 8 contact points is close the rotor. Make that one #1 cylinder, twisting the distributor so that contact point is aligned with the rotor, and then just attach the rest of the plug wires in the firing order. This should be close enough to start the engine. Once you get the engine running, you can set the idle speed and correct timing with a timing ligt and rpm gauge. |
Chuck,
You can check tdc at #1 without pulling off valve cover,.....romove #1 spark plug and rotate crank with wrench on crank pulley bolt, you can easily veiw piston in #1 cylinder with flashlight htrough plug hole, check ignition timing rotor to make sure it is pointing at #1plug wire, if not ,rotate engine 360. good luck..she should light right up! |
TDC through the sparkplug hole
Don't forget when doing it this way to confirm that as you turn the engine and the piston rises that it is actually on the compression stroke and not the exhaust stroke. You can confirm the compression stroke by placing your finger over the sparkplug hole and feeling/hearing for the rush of air by your finger. Once the compression stroke is confirmed I take a small screwdriver and place the tip through the sparkplug hole on the top of the piston. This makes seeing the movement of the piston and finding TDC much easier. Good luck.
