What would be a sensible rev limit for my 331 stroker that I'm building?

Hi Simon, I would have a nice sensible rev limit would be 5750 rpm with occasional blips to 6000 rpm.
I guess it depends to what state of tune you're building the engine?:D |
Simon - you are not really giving enough details for anyone to suggest a rev limit. For example:
Crank/rods/pistons - forged or cast? Cam - hydraulic or solid? valve spring spec? etc. If you are using a hydraulic cam, that would probably be the limiting factor as the lifters will pump up around 6000rpm anyway. Otherwise, valvetrain "float" rpm would be the limit, assuming a solid bottom end, and that limit depends on so many things. HTH |

331 crank H-beam rods Ali pistons (probably...haven't bought them yet) Edelbrock performer plus hydraulic cam (purely for the nice tickover I have in the current engine) World windsor senior ali heads with scorpion roller rockers (valve springs to match cam) I'm thinking of building it with a compression ratio of about 9:1 so I can have the option of a supercharger when I win the lottery! If you are using a hydraulic lifter cam that will limit your rpm as stated above to around 6000 - 6500. I regularly spin my 331 to 6000rpm, but 6500 rpm is right at the limit of the hydaulic roller lifters. If you are running a solid lifter cam the next question is forged steel crank or cast crank ? and are you going to use a main stud girdle. With a good crank and the bottom end of the (stock) block beefed up you should be safe for 7000rpm. The problem with camming a motor to make good power at 7000rpm is that it will be a bear to drive around town due to the cam timing required. If you want a streetable motor (cam) 6000rpm seems like a good redline. A cam with 0.05" timing around 220 degrees intake 225 degrees exhaust with 112 degree lobe centers will make great power to 6500rpm in your 331 and still be driveable with a reasonable idle. You have a lot of cam choices in this range.

What would the rev limit be on a 427 stroker with cast steel crank, I beam rods and a hydraulic lifter cam ? Seems anything over 6000 (where it stops producing hp) would be unnecessary...Any thoughts ?
