BMW 3series diff vs, Ford 8.8

Is the BMW differential as strong as the Ford 8.8? How much HP and torque can it take? Any experience? Thanks.

MyCobra,
I assume you're talking about the Backdraft car. I'll let other technical experts give more precise details, but it is my understanding that if you plan to go with anything more than a mid-range 351, you'll probably want a different rear end. I'm not sure if that is the same rear as the M3 uses, but the stock 3 series cars were from about 150hp-2xx hp. I'd be concerned how well it would handle 300-400+ hp.
Also depends on what you will do with the car. If you're just going to cruise, you may get away with lots of power. If you're going to race, you'll probably want something stronger.

Steve & Mycobra don't be to concerned with the stock BMW rear end. I have a Backdraft and they handle great. I was just dynoed at 320 hp to the wheels and was at the homestead track doing autocross & 1/8 mile runs with no problem.

BDR's test car back in South Africa runs a 600 HP engine with slicks and the only thing it breaks are t-5 tranny's.

Reg the owner is running in his personal car a 351 strocked to 408 with street slicks and a 3.1 rear and spins the tires just rolling on the gas through all the gears. The BMW handles the power just fine.

one thing to consider is how much do replacement parts cost if the unit does break?

You can easily find replacement R&P's for ford 8.8 rear ends for around $200,,,and bearing-rebuild kits are very reasonable.

You may want to check to compare what those pieces will cost for a BMW diff.
