Colors
How do you guys pick your colors? I am looking at the House of Kolor color sheets and the internet doesnt represent them well. Is there a better website, or can I order a color sheet? Are there other quality paint producers I should be looking at? The Superformance color palette is slim-pickins, and it seems that many of you have picked custom colors for your cars and I am wondering how the process unfolds....questions, questions, questions
Thanks, Dane |
Some thoughts and advice for you, Dane.
First, and most important...don't choose a color based on what you see on your monitor screen! Variations in monitor color accuracy and 'temperature' may show a shade one way on line and quite different in person. Further, the lighting in play when a photo was taken can distort the true hue of a color.... but, on-line pictures can certainly get you in the ball-park. Now, two tips.... plan on going to a large event, like Carlisle or, certainly, DVSF. Keep a notebook in your pocket and seek out the cars you like and talk to the owner. (DVSF is great, because the cars in attendance are numbered and you can alway contact someone after the event.) The second is to cruise the car dealers (if you are going with a contemporary color).. new car tissues on the window states the Paint Name, and it is easy to get Paint Codes for them. |

Just a thoght,HOK paints are very nice but very difficult to touch up in case of accident. They are fine for show cars or if you do not drive much but my painter changed my mind even though he prefers to use HOK paints because of the beauty.I wanted a driver that I would not panic if I got a chip in the paint so I settled on a chrysler color. chuck

PAINT
THE SAME PAINT ON A SMALL CAR MIGHT LOOK DIFFERENT ON A LARGER CAR. THE TIRES, TRIM, INTERIOR COLORS ALL PLAY A PART IN OVERALL "LOOKS ": COLOR SHADE. I WAS GOING TO PAINT MY CAR FORD CHROME YELLOW UNTILL A GUY AT A CAR SHOW POINTED OUT THE " GREEN" TINT IN THE FORD YELLOW. PROVED HE'S POINT BY SHOWING ME A YELLOW MUSTANG AND A YELLOW CORVETTE PARKED SIDE BY SIDE. I'M VERY GLAD HE DID. MY CAR LOOKS DIFFERENT WITH THE WINDSHIELD AND SILVER JETCOAT SIDE PIPES. CHROME, ALUM AND SILVER TRIM PIECES HAVE TONE DOWN THE LOUD VIPER YELLOW PAINT ON MY CAR. NOW THAT THE CAR IS FINISHED, ALL MY COBRA BUDDY HAVE ADMITTED THAT THE CAR LOOKS GREAT. BUT WHEN THEY FIRST HEARD THAT I WAS GOING TO PAINT IT YELLOW THEY DID NOT THINK THEY WOULD LIKE IT.
I KNEW YELLOW WAS A COLOR THAT DID NOT LOOK GOOD ON MOST CAR. VERY FEW! BUT IT WAS DIFFERENT AND ONE OF MY FAVORITE COLORS. WIFE AND KIDS HATE IT. A LOUD COLOR FOR A LOUD CAR! I EVEN BOUGHT A BLACK DIE CAST COBRA AND REMOVED EVERYTHING AND SANDED IT DOWN. HAD A FRIEND AT A BODY SHOP PAINT IT CHROME YELLOW. I THEN PAINT THE INTERIOR THE COLORS I WANTED. JUST TO SEE IF ALL THE COLORS WORKED TOGETHER. I THINK THEY DO. MY WIFE WANTED ( LOTS OF PRESSURE) ME TO PAINT IT RED. I LOOKED AT A LOT OF DIFFERENT RED. CRUISED A BUNCH OF CAR LOTS LOOKING. DID U TURNS WHILE DRIVE JUST TO GO BACK AND LOOK AT A CAR IN A PARKING LOT OR DRIVEWAY. RED IS MY FAVORITE COLOR! WHILE WORKING IN ST LOUIS I WAS GASSING UP THE TOWN CAR WHEN A OLDER YELLOW MUSTANG PULLED UP TO THE PUMP BESIDE ME. IT WAS THE SHADE OF YELLOW THAT I WANTED. I ASKED HIM THE COLOR. AFTER MANY MONTHS OF LOOKING AND WORRING, I PAINTED IT 2001 VIPER YELLOW. MOST MEN ARE COLOR BLIND AND THE REST OF THE PEOPLE DON'T CARE WHAT COLOR YOU PAINT YOUR CAR. PAINT IT THE COLOR YOU LIKE!! IT'S YOUR CAR. |
There is a distinct advantage to picking a stock color from a new production car in that the paint codes are all available so it can be easily matched in the case of repairs.
Just stop by a few of the car dealers and ask for the brocures on cars you like the colors on. |
I thought about it & ran various ideas through my head. I wanted something different but & wanted to retain the feel of the era & the cars. Once I decided I was pretty sure what I wanted I bought a plastic model car & painted it to see if it would look the way I pictured it in my mind. "Click the link below" to see my results! My interior will actually be stock comp. as it comes from ERA & I will be running pin drive Kidney Bean wheels which will be Powder Coated dark Grey.
