Halon Extinguisher Prices?
What's a good price for a 2.5 lb. halon extinguisher? This weekend I saw a 2.5 lb. chrome extinguisher for $160 or standard red extinguisher for $145. Is that a good price? Have you found a better price? If so, where?
Thanks, Mike |

I'll second the question....

the necessary..
What you saw seems to be the going prices for Halon or Halitron extinguishers. I bought a 5 lb. Halitron bottle from a place called Harrell Medical in Washington State for $140 and change. Bigger than I really wanted, but after the nylon oil gauge line split and sent oil all over the headers (with attendant HUGE f**king fireball) I figgered it was probably for the better. I do think they have a smaller one for about $115 or so - search for Harrell Medical on Google or whatever. Quick delivery too - took about 3 days. Be aware, however, that halon has been out of production since about 1999 or so - but it seems Halitron is its replacement. Hope to hell I never have to find out how good it is.:)

Enzo,
Your prices look pretty good. Can you tell me how much it cost to refill the halitron units? Paul |
Paul,
I just called my supplier and she said at this point you would have to buy special equipment and bulk refillable stuff which not many companies are set up with and at this point in time her honest opinion is that you'd be better off buying a new one if you used it all up. I guess that is the down side of the halitron although all the info I have on it is really good. Paula |
Paula,
Thanks for the honest reply. Once in a while, driving to work on the worst freeway in the world, the 405, I will see a car on the side of the road with smoke rolling out from under the hood. I have had success in the past putting out car fires, but these days, I never seem to have an extinguisher with me in my commuter car (there's always one in the Cobra). It's one thing to whip out your $20 dry chemical unit to help out a fellow motorist, but I'd have to think for a minute about blowing away $145 of halitron. Maybe the insurance company would reimburse me, maybe not. At least I'll know the cost of the exercise up front. :D Paul |
