Can anyone give me some suggestions as to where to start or how to proceed in getting a title for a car with a New York registration as a 1964 Ford convertable? I live in Dallas, TX:JEKYLHYDE

You should have the title if its already been registered in NY? I want to make sure but your trying to get it registered right?

If so you will take the title and go to the county office for registration of the vehicle...now before you do that you will need to get a greensheet. Any inspection station can get you this....basically they will inspect the car and give you a little green sheet that the county office uses.

Take the green sheet and your insurance down to the county office and you should be good to go....I think I got everything...What county are you in and where in Dallas are you located....might help to post this under the texas club section.

A note- I Have a simillar problem with a 1967 T-Bird in PA. Purchaced the vehicle from the original owner family in NY several years ago. Only has NY registration which I have been told also serves as the ownership documentation. No title like other states. I never planned to use the vehicle just got it for the 428 engine. Now I am not sure what to do either. Perhaps New Yorkers could shed some light on our dilemma.

For many years, NY did not issue titles, but merely used the registration as the title. As I understand it, since the registration is proof of ownership and the equivalent of a title, if you take the NY registration papers to the local DMV in your state, your state should issue you a new title for the car with the information set forth on the registration. I don't think the process is any different than transferring the title on a new car that has a title.

I believe that if the car was titled in NY prior to 1985, the registration served as the title and as such was a "transferrable" document by signing the back. Newer registrations have "NON-TRANSFERRABLE" across the top.

Not 100% certain of the cut off year, but i do remember reading that somewhere. If I could only remember where..:confused:

Make sure the registration is for a vehicle identification number attache to the vehicle you are buying. Vehicle must have a VIN assigned by the state in most states.

If you have a reg from new york your all set.It should say transferable on it.If it does that takes the place of a title.Thats all you need to register it in your home state.And vice versa,if you walk into a dmv in new york you will need a notarized bill of sale,insurance binder,current reg for that car even if it`s expired and a form for nys sales tax for the purchase price.just my .02 hope it helps

As of the 1973 model year New York became a title state. Prior to that only a registration was issued and a car could be sold by signing the sellers section on the reg. Vehicles that come into New York from outside the state are subject to random inspection by the DMV. Be aware that any car from Alabama or other "title service" (read "Titles Unltd") states WILL be inspected.

Everyone has been a great help. Thanks so much. Here is the latest wrinkle. The NY Reg is not for the car in question, but a junk. HMMM. I think what I might try is to use the original certifictate or origin from the manuracturer, he has that, and a statement from the owner that the car has been a trailered race/show car withouit registration. And try and get an original title in Texas using that and the bill of sale. Any thoughts or suggestions on this course of action?

Now all I have to do is figure out how to get the car appraised for insurance and finance. Any thoughts on this. I am realy digging in my heals on this to make it happen and the wife says go for it. Great wife I have.

Try to get ahold of Thompson660@cs.com (Dick Thompson) in Colorado reagrding an appraisal. Great guy and knows Cobra's. He may be able to appraise car or give you a name to contact.

Spend the money to see vehicle before paying balance if possible.It might save you regrets later.:CRY:
