New Ford GT, or a CSX 4XXX?

If you could only have one of these two cars, what would it be? And what are your reasons for your choice?

Ken Greene 05-07-2003 05:33 PM

Ford GT
reason Shelby don't none of my money

mikiec 05-07-2003 05:34 PM

The CSX4000

Reason....Never a big fan of the GT40.

The new Ford GT is so cool! Saw it at the Chicago auto show. I would have to go with the GT.

reason: I do a few doughnuts in it and sell it to build the ultimate Cobra

Edley,

I wanted both for quite some time. Considered the ERA GT40 for a while. Now the new GT is out, and will cost more than a CSX4000...but I would pass. Only plus is that it has a roof, and can hit some top speeds. But......If you ever have the chance to sit in one, it's a little claustrophibic. Just have to get use to it, but I would guess after you purchased it, you would have a stronger urge to get a Cobra. Nothing beats the heart pumping, street pounding Brutal Cobra.

Would I consider the GT....No! But I still love the original GT40's. **)

Drive both.
Pick the replica of your choice.

GT40

If I was going to buy a ridiculously over-priced car, I'd at least want it to have A/C and modern safety equipment.

Clois Harlan 05-08-2003 07:09 AM

Has to be the GT 40. There is just something about a mid-engine car with a set of headers that is refered to as "a bundle of snakes". I have watched these things on the track and even sat in one or two originals and I would love to own one someday powered by a stroked 351.

Chaplin 05-08-2003 07:54 AM

Depends on why I'm buying it. If i'm buying just to drive and enjoy, probably the 4000. If I'm buying with the thought of holding onto it as investment, probably the GT. If you look ahead 40 years, the GT has all the attributes that makes cars collectable and valuable: limited production, high performance and good looks. In that respect, the GT kind of reminds me a certain car made by Shelby in the 60s.

Of course, there's no guarantee that 40 years from now a GT will be worth more than a 4000 series, and it very well in fact may not be, but there is something intriguing about that kind of style and performance rolling off a production line from Detroit. A modern 60s muscle car if you will.

GT-40

Many of us have had expensive problems that were not anticipated with owning replicas which includes the Shelby 4000's since they are all sold unpowered.
I think since the GT 40 comes with the backing of FORD and will have a warranty, it sound like a good move but I would wait a few years until they shake the bugs out. I had one of the first 1992 Vipers. It was a nightmare but it was under warranty. They are much better now from what I hear.

Tuff choice. That GT looked pretty tasty at the NY Auto show.

Push come to shove I'd probably stick with the Cobra. Just can't match its period look, feel, character, top down excitment.

The Shelby Cobra is still a legend and instantly recognizable even to non car buffs. The GT 40 not as well known to the public.

Would love to have both though!

Tongue Pirate 05-09-2003 03:10 PM

Cobra! Why? History has shown that the concept you see at the auto show never translates into what ends up at the dealership. What is the "GT" going to sell for?

James Baldwin 05-09-2003 06:24 PM

The Shelby... With the Cobra, you know what your getting.

Besides, with Detroit'd concept-car track record, the GT will probably be released with 14" wheels, 4 - cyl. turbo engine and bumpers the size of Anna Nicole Smith, etc...

:)

..So let me get this straight. You would rather have a kit car than a re-creation and updated version of the car that;
-won LeMans 4 years straight, beat the pants off Ferrari, comes backed by the Largest Auto Maker in History and has a factorywarranty???
You really think it will come with a 4 cyl and 14" wheels?
-I doubt it.
If you are in your kit car an happen to see a GT 40 coming up behind you, don't waste your time...let it go. No contest.

Gotta be a Cobra! No EPA crap to worry about!!

Excaliber 05-09-2003 09:38 PM

All in a days work....

GT (40) for me! I drove one back in the 70's. Those memories are in COLOR, it left such an impression I can almost smell the tire smoke.

.....two big black swaths of rubber appearing magically in the rear view mirror as the car shot forward. Transfixed by the site in the mirror I suddenly realized the engine was screaming in my ear. I stabbed the clutch and pulled the gear lever hard into second.

Going up through the gears I glanced at the speedo,,,,135,,,,corner coming up fast. I was on the brakes like white on rice and started my down shifts, the car was incredibly stable. No darting, no wavering, just solid and planted.

OK!! She runs good, better get it back to the shop for the customer..............

Steve,

I am really being facetious about concept car 4 cyl stuff. I actually think Ford is doing it right. I highly anticipate the GT coming to market.

That said, I still prefer the Cobra, its simplicity and feeling of power that only a Cobra can bring. :)
