Not quite a Hal tale, but...
...had a great first long drive with the Kirkham. 400 miles round trip to Turk's place up in Vacaville--across the Delta. Crisp drive up Saturday morning. Came across a couple a dozen rods heading south to a car show--waves back and forth. A Cobra (a silver FFR) heading the other way as well. Another one near Turk's with no hood--in progress?
One of those great California spring days--folks out driving just for the shear pleasure of it. The Kirkham and the big bad Boghosian motor just torqued along--sucking gas at an extreme rate, oil pressure at 85 at 3K, 70 degrees cent. on the water, 80C on the oil, and no hiccups. Comfortable with the Big & Tall mods performed the Dave & Tom comedy team. Tracked true and straight even over the highly grooved and chunked Hwy 99. As to current concerns--got the temp from the DMV with not much hassle. Called Grundy and got insured for agreed value with no mileage limit. Made it home with no tickets. And oh, by the way--I lived to type this. Believe it or not, the sky didn't fall...;) |

Sorry--Wilwoods. Brick wall connected to the middle pedal. This car is so damn solid! Remember--I'm comparing it to my (now Fred's) beloved Butler (essentially a Tiger Tank for the road), and this thing is every bit "of a piece". No cowl or windshield shake, no squeaks, clunks, etc. Speed bumps are actually fun.:3DSMILE: But my main point of this thread is to remind folks that our world is still alive and well. Let's not bury our heads in the ground, but don't be afraid either. DMV process in California was not that bad (so far), and insurance was one phone call and one application away. I drive sanely on the street--I love the long Gashole cruises--and I have fun at autocrosses and at open track events. I'm gonna park this beast at the SCCA corral at the Concours this weekend. It's all good. Let's not forget to have fun. |

These cars are about fun and friends. I'm off for a 300 mile Roundtrip this weekend. 2 weeks ago I did 600 miles roundtrip. Still debating on driving to the fling. Mike |

Mike, make the drive. My drive from Pheonix to Columbus was a most memorable trip. We took it easy and spent four days on the road. Gave us a chance to stop and take in some of the sites, a little route 66 action, etc. Do you know Randy Resiter? Is he coming? Seems to me there are a few others coming from the Pheonix area, you can hook up with them. 37 days and counting! Rick |

Yes, I know Randy. The last time I talked to him he was not going to the Fling. There is a caravan of 6 to 7 cars leaving Phx to drive to the fling. The reason I'm not sure is that the wife and I may go to Boston the week before to visit relatives. If that is the case we will fly to Ohio on Thursday rent a car. I'll look for someone to ride with when I get there. Mike P.S. So how is Randy's old car doing? |

Tell us more about the motor, oil at 85 and 3k water at 70 c= 158 F oil at 80 c= 176 F Compresion, type of cam, cuin, runs cool at 3k glad you enjoy it, you lucky dog:D :D :D :D |

Joe Boghosian has been building high-end race and street motors for decades. Built Andretti's four-cam that won Indy in 69, has kept Dick Smith up to his eyeballs in 427 FEs, AA/Fueler-Funny Car-Drag Boat motors (Whisky River is his nephew's), sprint car and modifieds motors, flatheads, Offys, etc. Many of his "little secrets" under my hood. Shelby Block--cleaned up, extra work on the oil journals, etc. Edelbrock heads REALLY reworked by Joe--sticking your fingers in the holes almost felt nasty. 4.250 crank by Joe Velasco. I need to get the final cam (roller) specs from him, but a lot of lift doesn't scare him for the street. 850 Holly--cleaned up a bit. MSD 6AL and all the other normal good stuff. He did everything he could to insure it would run cool during the hot Fresno summer, and all indications are that he has succeeded. It is well matched to one of David Kee's toploaders (big in/out) and 3.31s out back. |

You are welcome to ship the car to my house if you like since I live in Columbus and then you could drive it back to Pheonix. Up to you. I will just tuck it away in the garage and cover it until you come to get it.
Unfortuniatly I can not offer you a seat since mine has a waiting list! Randy's old ride is just doing great. The car has been reliable as the day is long. The only issue I have had was a spun wheel bearing. No biggy. Of course, I can not leave anything alone. So bit by bit every little part of the car is getting changed, massaged, replaced, improved. I bought the car to drive and as a hobby and that is how I am using it! I have a stack of parts waiting to be put on, more on order, and BIG plans for more to come. Randy did some nice things to the car, I am making it even better! You aren't the guy I met at the Pavilion when I was in town to buy the car spring of 2002 are you? Rick |
