NOS 427 block - "never used"
So what's the scoop with this one? Just curious...

Pretty much self explanitory, he has a NOS (New Old Stock) 1968 forged block fresh out of the original crate/box........

IF (big IF there) it is as he says, the current price (about $4950 as of this reply) is probably not out of line with present market conditions. However, one note of caution. I talked with the folks at Southern when I got my engine about NOS blocks. At that time Bill had a group of NOS blocks which he was selling at a premium over the "seasoned" blocks. He told me that for every three NOS blocks he pulled out of the crates, one was cracked. Also (and not to beat a dead horse here) while Le Mans rods were the be-all and end-all in 1966, and would be OK for street use, I personally would think twice about using them in a racing motor nowadays, as there is much better equipment on the market. My $0.02 anyway. |
Thanks for the input. I have (like a lot of us here) always been fascinated by the SO. And I agree with the comments on that other thread -- I believe they have a sound of their own too.

15k? :LOL: a completely NOS engine can be built.. The last one I saw was 35k to build.

Not that this deal is anything but authentic, but how did the block get tanked taking off the color codes and not the primer? It may very well be a wip but you should have someone look at it before buying it has never been assembled.

At .005 over it was a service / industrial block (lower Q/C) or it was run and taken 5 over to knock off the wear ridge.. Either way take it with a grain of salt.

BTW, I meant an additional $15K on top of the purchase price for the block. So I wasn't as far off as you might have thought. :)

Please do me a favor and add up the components and labor that would equil $35,000 for a 427 SO.
Not to say that you couldn't spend that, but you'd realy have to try hard to do it! :) |
Here's an example of what I'm talking about.
This is a 427 SO, built by a very reputable FE guy, claiming to have cost $30k to build (however, you can buy it now, brand new for $22k, :) ) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2415644239 As you can see, it's not your average cobra motor. If you believe the HP numbers, this beast makes most FEs around here look like a Briggs and Stratton. Again, I'd like to see someone post receipts of their FE build up that ran $35 large to make less than 1/3 the HP of this example. COME ON! |

Engine is setup to run alcohol.
Great for a drag only car, but I doubt someone looking to build a show car wants a lot of those heads. Will the blower even fit under the hood of a cobra? I highly doubt it. Worth a lot of money to someone who is looking for THAT engine. But I doubt someone who wants a side oiler, 427 heads, shelby intake and dual quads have much interest in it... -steve in nj- |
A 14-71 blower? That translates to 994 cubic inches of "huff." Isnt that a little much? Or are my calculations out of date?

How much is a NOS 427 tunnel wedge manifold with NOS linkage, NOS carbs and NOS fuel log worth? If you said $3500 you would be low.. That gets you the induction system and you aren't even into the money parts. Machine work, which believe it or not is more extensive on a NOS block than a seasoned block, $4k plus the block which was $5.5k plus the crank that was $1k.. sonic mapping, Eagle rods, Custom pistons, .005 over, $700 oil pan $400 NOS valve covers, $150 oil pump... You get the idea.. NOS (upgraded) C5AE heads $4000, valves, springs rockers, $1500.. Assembly and fitting, misc. costs, NOS water pump, alternator, New Mcloud clutch, 3 hours of run time and a half a dozen dyno runs, shipping from Hastings, Nebraska..
I'm not saying it is a good investment. Or maybe it is.. I'm just saying I know a guy.. (many of you do as well..) You need to pay to play. You want to play NOS, I'm just saying it can be done.. It costs.. Thats all. |

my motor cost 16k to build,,that dosent count block,crank or rods,
it adds up pretty fast |
How do you spend 16K without including the cost of the block, crank & rods. I am rebuilding my S.O. and splurged for the custom JE pistons, 220 psi bolt/H-Beam rods, Aviad oilpan and reusing the block, heads, crank, intake, carb and assessories. Are your heads & intake $13K? A good motor can be built by a reputable shop "economically'.
