Motor Running On

My stroker is continuinig to run and sputter (sounds like detonation) for a brief second after I kill it - I run 108 leaded mixed with 91 pump gas. The carb was just tuned not too long ago so I'm wondering why this would be happeneing ??? Any thoughts ??

Lower the idle speed. If that doesn't work, than leave it in gear, with your rght foot FIRMLY on the brake, let the clutch drag ever so slightly when killing the motor. This won't attack the cause of your dieseling problem, but will stop the symptoms.

Fixit - So what are the probable causes of my deiseling problem ?? Thanks in advance.

agro1, The other problem that causes run on is the electric fan. If you don't have it isolated with a diode or relay it will generate power back to the ignition until the fan stops. Otherwise fixit is right, you may need to lower idle speed. I also find that if you let the engine idle for a few seconds after you stop, it will settle and not run on.

Thanks guys - much appreciated :)

He has a SPF, the fan is fully isolated from the ign circuit by a relay. It's a dieseling problem, hot spots in the chamber. Maybe his plugs are a bit too hot for a 12:1 motor.

Hmmmmmm....Well this only started happening a couple weeks ago. I've never had the problem before...Sounds like a POS Honda when I shut it off...Total buzz kill. :(

My car runs on--but I expect it to. I set the idle at 1200 to keep the plugs clean. Lowering the idle has always cured the run-on, but I prefer to leave the idle high for other reasons.

One other thing I have noticed is, retarding the timing just a tad cured the run-on as well. Of course, you run the risk of affecting performance by doing this.

I do the let the clutch out thing.

Fixit is right..

If you allow it to run on, it may also reverse direction at the end of the run, causing damage to the motor. Kill it asap, using the process fixit suggests.

Here's some other reasons not to let your motor deisel.

1) it's embarrasing

2) Your not exactly getting good oil pressure while it chokes and sputters so you're putting a lot of needless wear on your motor's internal parts.

I have found that setting the curb idle too high is usually the reason.
