VIR Update

All,

VIR was wet, wet, wet and fun, fun, fun.

I'll put a travelogue and pics up this weekend. I must say I was sad to miss the Club Crankoids, who enticed me to my first VIR last year and opened up this great hobby for me. Even went as far as getting the full width rollbar installed to enlarge my track opportunities. But, I understand Club Cranky may be back, so I'll hold out for that.

Anyone know how to put video up on the web or even here? I've got some fun in-car video of figure eights and the VIR track that aren't bad (unless you count the driving...)

Hal Copple has posted a few words, but could surely say more about his experience, bard that he is.

Club Cranky was dis-invited this year. My best guess is that the sponsors had all the SPF's they needed to run the event, and didn't want to dilute the gene pool with our out-of-brand stuff, especially since it was being shot by Speed Channel.. No big deal, it is an SPF event, sponsored by the best dealer they have (at least as far as performance driving is concerned). It happens all the time with Marque Clubs. Hope we get re-invited next time, I liked the event and the people we met, even if most were from the south (hehehe).

we had 60 SPF's, with every sort of engine, some came on/in trailors, many driven long distances. The track was damp most of the time, but for a few hours on sat, at least the main straight was pretty dry. Lots of instructioni, Mac DeMere and one of his mates from the Michelein test track came to be instructors, Mac was very complementary to me on my 396 Stroker's power on the long VIR front straight. Of course, Bob and Dennis Olthoff also spent many hours in one car or another, giving in-car training. They brought their Car and Driver Shoot Out car too, and gave demo rides to all who asked. It has a hardtop on it.

It turned out that the wet conditions really helped all of us learn car control more safely, because when you go off a wet track, you are not going as fast. Actually, some of us "old hands" felt that the wet track was not only a great learning tool, it was a large factor in our not having a single car hit any Armco or tire barriers, nor were any engines blown up.

We also had Ladies Only track times, and trust me, we have some SPF female drivers who can hold their own against any male out there. Typical track times were 20 minutes, and we had all the course time any body wanted.

I had Bob J. take me out in the Great Stroker for a refresher, he is an experience driver, and i saw 130 mph swing by on the straight, before he decided to ease into the Wilwoods for the "*****" as the turn at the end of the straight is called.

We also had lots of wet skidpad, figure 8 training, too.

All in all, a safe, very educational weekend, and well worth the time and money for both our experienced and our Rookie SPF drivers.

I agree with Hal-- this weekend was a lot of fun even if conditions were less than ideal. Always a good learning experience at VIR. And really nice people and cars. Kudos to the Olthoff's and Mike Stenhouse on another successful VIR event. Hopefully we'll be back in the Fall. And hopefully the weather will be better ('cause I DRIVE my car to VIR-- it was a little damp this time!). And thanks to Hal for his kind offer of assistance in checking out my car's rattle (turns out it was just a loose air cleaner). I'm already looking foreward to the next VIR event. If you can attend, I highly recommend it!-- J.D.

We Finally Made it Home

AFTER TEN DAYS OF DRIVING IN THE RAIN I'M GOING TO BUILD AN ARK. WE TOOK A LITTLE DETOUR OVER TO ASHVILLE NC ON THE WAY HOME. GOT A CHANCE TO TAKE THE COBRA OUT ON THE BLUERIDGE PARKWAY TUESDAY AFTERNOON. WHAT A GREAT TRIP THRU SOME OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PARTS OF THIS COUNTRY. THEN ON WED. AFTERNOON HEADED ON DOWN THE PARKWAY AGAIN WITH TRAILER IN TOW TO BREVARD AND THEN ON TO CASHIERS. QUITE AN EXPERIENCE, BUT NOT ONE PROBLEM. I NOW CONSIDER MYSELF AN EXPERT ON TOWING IN ADVERSE CONDITIONS ON MOUNTAIN ROADS. IT WAS ACTUALLY EASIER THAN DRIVING THE INTERSTATE SYSTEM. THE TUNNELS WERE REALLY FUN, WE DON'T HAVE TOO MANY OF THOSE DOWN HERE IN SO. FLA.
ANYHOW, CAROL AND I ENJOYED MEETING SO MANY NEW FRIENDS AND PUTTING FACES TOGETHER WITH THE PEOPLE HERE ON CC THAT HAVE BEEN SO HELPFUL OVER THE PAST YEAR. WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE NEXT EVENT.
