Why do you suppose an individual would bolt a tow bar to a vehicle that will be worth half a million dollars??

I've always wondered why there wasn't more effort put into lowering the cars back then. Several pictures (from different sources) show a LOT of body roll. The first thing I did to prepare MY ride for the track was get it as low as practical. Seems to me they were a good 5 or 6 inches in height.

"Open track" racing today. I did "fair", had a great time. A number of cars clearly faster than me, but I DROVE mine to the track AND home! Raced ALL day, from 9 am till 10 pm, whew, LONG day.

As the attached picture of Sam Feinstein in Cumberland in 1970 shows, the righteous thunder of the 427 Cobra racers in the region lasted well past their original owners.

I'm on the organizing committee for the second year of the National Road event, a revival of the Cumberland Airport Races and we are looking to make a connection with Ford and the Cobra community for 2004. I run the web site and we've had numerous visitors from the ford.com server in Dearborn. They've downloaded a bunch of pictures, so we know that "somebody" who wears a blue oval is tuned to the great Cobra history that pounded through Cumberland! The snakes were in the Vette's backyard at our airport, since Cumberland was a Steel Cities Region race, and the Corvette Club of Western Pennsylvania boasted Grady Davis and the Gulf Oil gang among their members. Among the Vettes that Johnson stomped here were some very special ZO6 cars that would fetch Cobra like prices if on the market today.

This year, we're featuring Porsche and Corvette, as both marques made waves at our airport...Bruce Jennings' "King Carrera" and Don Yenko and Dick Thompson in Corvettes. But, Cobra is an obvious next step!

Hal Keck had a Cobra with the #88 . He drove it for years with that #88. His first sponsor was Hellertown Motors(PA) Also had Archway Ford as a sponsor. The car was blue and awesome fast!
I was a teenager when Hal won the A/P class at Giants Despair Hillclimb in Pa. (Several yrs) I saw that car hit a rock with the right front fender, Keck said it was very foggy that morning and he went off the road a bit, no big deal!
Also saw Keck and Oscar Koveleski (Auto World Can Am) drive # 88 to victory at the Glen Six Hours. Can't imagine driving a 427 Cobra for a six hr race . These guys were having a BLAST!! What an experience!
Don't know if Hal Keck is still around. I think the car is in Shelby's stable. Don't know for sure. What a car!!

Here's the car you're thinking of. In rain in Cumberland in 1967 on the front row of the A Sport race with two other Cobras. Note no Corvettes in sight. Second row was filled with Shelby Mustangs!

I will venture a guess Ernie, although I suspect you may already know. It is a typical egg/chicken thing. Tire and suspension components(shocks) have made great leaps in their abilities. Most street tire and good factory shocks of today are much better than some of the most expensive comparable parts of the era. I think the leaning , although not considered desirable now, was a needed part of the handling. I think that the tire would have been more likely to break loose if they had made the suspension any flatter. I could be totally off base, but my experiences with the components from the period and the components as they evolved to our current pieces makes me think that. I know you are just a young pup (LOL) so some of that stuff probably happened before you were born.;)
