Wind Wings...
Has anyone successfully replaced the plastic wind wings, with ones made out of glass.
I am tired of bugs and (my cigarettes) doing damage to the plastic. they are hard to clean adn scratch easily. Can any glass shop cut a pair out of some sort of safety galss and drill the holes. What kind a glass one would use for this application? TURK |

I had both my wind wings and visors made by a local glass shop out of lexan and a bullet won't scratch it. I just took the old plexiglass ones down and they cut the new ones out of some left over stock and drilled the holes and charged me $37 dollars for all four. Of course that was back in 1997, so add a few dollars to that. I have had small rocks hit mine and you can't even find where they hit but you can certainly see the chips in the windshield. If you use lexan, get the hard-coated kind. The standard grade is very soft.

Is anyone etching the "Cobra" into the glass or Lexan to make it right?

So nobody has glass ones on their car? Did they mount ok? I have had 3 sets of plastic ones.. The last set got here and it was already messed up.. I wrote the company and told them, sent them pics of the cracks (not scratches) I never heard back.. That was a year ago. I chalked it up to them all being bad.. Pretty reputable company (they are mentioned in this thread)
So the question is? are the glass ones any good? Is there a good place to get them other than the place mentioned in this thread? |
For those who are struggling to get the paper backing off the plexiglass Wind Wings, or sun visors.....
I had a few sets I had not planned on using for a while, not until the car was ready. So I left the paper backing on, longer than I should. The adhesive on the protective paper dries. When I went to peel the protective paper backing off, it was a mess. No amount of rubbing scratching helped. It would just move the adhesive from one end of the plastic to the other areas.. I then used rubbing alchohol. It works. Soak a few paper towels in rubbing alchohol and sandwich the plastic piece between the towels. After 30 minutes or so, you should be able to peel the backing off. TURK |

I wish I did. However when it comes to booze, I am not that far behind the Kirkhams... Costco had a sale on rubbing alchohol, and I came home with 12 bottles. Now everything gets rubbing alchohol. Like that Greek father in My Big fat Greek Wedding movie, he with Windex for all that ails you, and me with Rubbing alcohol. Still thinking about a trip.Will advise. TURK |
WD-40 will soak the adhesive right off as well.

But you will scratch the heck out of it while trying to get the WD-40 Oily film of the plexiglass. Or do you simply wash it with soap and water?

Glass windwings no problem here in the UK Turk, let me know if I should have some extra hand luggage when I come over for the 'fling.
As to using alcohol to remove the protective sheets adhesive from plastic windwings - that would be OK on Acrylic (perspex) ones, but could well ruin Polycarbonate (plexi) units, since this material is notoriously susceptible to solvents (is why you should not paint or even polish polycarbonate crash helmets). There's also a product called "Goof Off" that is meant for such things. Most hardware stores carry it and I've even seen it in an office supply place. Works on nylon, vinyl, polypropylene but the can does not list polycarbonates. Contains xylene. Best thing I have ever found for removing sticky lables and the gunk they leave behind. Works on latex paint too. (Got some paint on my brickwork) Wipes right off. Soap and water will take off any film left behind. Just be sure to get all of the gunk off first.
