Princess Blue / Viking Blue

Does anyone have a PPG/Dupont paint code for these colors?

stale_face 05-26-2003 05:33 PM

Now, are you sure you want to be telling people that your cobra is "princess blue"?

blykins 05-26-2003 05:38 PM

Well, not if I don't have to...hehehe....I would prefer the "Viking Blue". But I'll settle. :)

I have a pic of an original...but I can't post it here because it's too large. If you guys wanna make a couple clicks, maybe you can identify what it is.

www.csxinfo.net

Go to #2....289 Cobra

Click on #7...CSX 2259 289 FIA

blykins 05-26-2003 05:39 PM

And while you guys are looking, can anyone tell me if those valve covers are available on the market....and if they would clear a set of roller rockers?

I'm also in the build stage right now, and probably like everyone else, the choice of color is just about the hardest thing about the car.

Hate to be a copycat, but the FFR of Tod Buttrick has impressed everyone I've shown a picture of it to, and has the stamp of approval of the boss (she who must be obeyed).

I might go with a bit less blue and a bit more silver on the base color though.

The colors are suppose to be 1965 ford portofino blue, and the stripe is dodge viper blue.

My appologies to Todd, but imitation is the best form of flattery after all.

That's a beautiful car...but I think I need a darker shade of blue. If you get a chance, look at the webpage that I gave directions to up above...I'm pretty sure this is "princess blue", but I would have no idea on how to find the color code for it.

stale_face 05-27-2003 01:27 PM

A very nice color, and a beautiful car.

Is this an accurate Shelby color for the original 289 FIA's?

blykins 05-27-2003 01:44 PM

I don't think it is stale...

From what I could gather from the registry the following colors were original:

Wimbleton White
Raven Black
Rangoon Red
Bright Red
Silver
Bare Aluminum
Ivy Green
Princess/Viking Blue
Guardsman Blue

The viking blue is the color of the car that I made the web reference to....the guardsman blue, from what I can gather, is the color of the comp cars...almost a Viper blue.

blykins 05-27-2003 01:46 PM

Wait a minute stale...which color were you asking about? The portofino blue color is not original. The color of the car that I referenced in a couple messages up (CSX 2259 I believe) was original...that's a pic of the original car...and the color is Viking Blue.

stale_face 05-27-2003 02:26 PM

blykins,

Sorry for the confusion, I was talking about the color of the CSX in your original post. The viking blue. You are obviously interested in matching an exact color from 40 years ago. Careful, that could lead to endless debates on clubcobra...

I was just saying that I like the colors of car I pasted above. I am not trying to recreate anything.

blykins 05-27-2003 02:42 PM

Well I kinda take the standpoint that these cars are meant to be "replicas." Therefore they should "replicate" the original cars. I know some would disagree, but this is the way I feel about it. I about crapped myself when my dad suggested that I put a big block Chevy motor in mine.....AAARGGGHHH

blykins 05-27-2003 02:44 PM

But then again....I guess I'm not too strict on my position....after all I have a bored and stroked 351w and a 9" in mine...hehehe You have your limits though....

HIPO289 05-28-2003 12:18 AM

PPG has an offset listed for viking blue, (offset is a recent formula that matches original color). It is a 87-88 nova (isizu I think ??) light blue metalic w/clearcoat. There are several shade variences avalible,( lighter, more vivid, etc.) I would have to search PPG color library for correct number. Or just look up nova in old 80's color chip books.

My West Coast is ready for paint and I too have been looking for a color that would "replicate" the Guardsman Blue. . . The closest colors that are on current production vehicles and IMO the nicest are:

Mopar: Patriot Blue (RAM Trucks)
Ford: Saffire Blue (Aerostar)

I will have to see the color chips side by each before making the final decision.

Viking Blue

Try autocolorlibrary.com. PPG Viking Blue code is 12494 Ford 1963 and 1964

blykins 05-29-2003 04:13 PM

Thanks for all your help guys. I took that PPG code and had my local paint shop mix me a half pint...it's way too light. I've seen cars that color in pictures, but for some reason the car that I listed the link to has a lot more deeper blue in it. That website says what number CSX that is...and after some cross-referencing, I found that the color was Viking Blue. For some reason, it looks nothing like it. :(

Any ideas?

Robert Evans 06-03-2003 01:05 AM

The FIA that you are referring to is not painted in Viking Blue. Lynn Parks 289 is a deeper shade of blue, although it was originally painted that color before the car was destroyed in 1964.

The original Viking Blue is a light shade of silver/blue with just a slight hint of green. My car in the photo gallery is painted the original Viking Blue.

So, where does "Portofino Blue" fit in this palette?
