Poster Car for Driveshaft Safety Loops
Well after only about 2100 miles my driveshaft front yoke let loose and I learned why a safety loop is so important in these cars! My wife and I were just cruising at about 60 mph when the front yoke snapped. Luckily we weren't hurt but I hate to think about what could have happened (especially in a FFR MK I car without a framed tranny tunnel). Hindsight is pretty good though so the repairs will of course include a new safety loop ($30). There's more pictures(and bigger too) of the carnage if you're interested on my build site (didn't want to post them all here)...

Joe.... so glad there was no personal injury.... the sheet metal is easy to replace.
Joe's pictures are a must-see if you do not have a safety loop.

Joe, count yourself lucky. Really glad you are OK and all you have to worry about is fixing the car versus human parts!

Thats awfully low mileage to snap a yoke.....have you checked the pinion angle at ride height to make sure its in proper alignment? You're a lucky guy.....

Thats is one short driveshaft. A driveshaft that short with a live axle rear, seems like any movement of the rear end and the driveshaft angle would be pretty severe.

My West Coast has an 1/8 inch steel shield
I would not want to bet my hip or leg (or my passengers!) on just a strap ! Make sure you have a steel pan shield too...

Not all...
many in the past have been and I assume still are a fabric strap. Either way I would not rust such a flimsy protection when 600 horsepower is concerned..

HUH???? Never seen a drive shaft safety loop made of anything other than steel. And when the time comes when you need the loop, your horsepower issue is moot. ;) |

Generally speaking, the purpose of a hoop is to keep a broken drive shaft from catching in sod, road pothole, crack or curb and pogo sticking you to the moon. If the shaft breaks and parts of it or the yoke act as shrapnel a hoop does little good and a protective steel pan or shield would be your best hope, like a scatter shield. Keep in mind as you nestle your leg alongside your tranny that they have been known to grenade too.

I second BinB...steel plate all the way 'round to shield you from the driveshaft if it breaks..as happened to jloyd63..and a steel loop to keep it from digging into the ground. Still...a failure like this at 2k miles???????????????????????????????????

That is an extremely short drive shaft. It looks to be about a foot long.
I am close to the point where my drive shaft has been ordered (19 inches) and I will be putting it in in the next few weeks so this topic is very relevent.
Seems like u-joint angles could have been too high for the load they were given?
I agree with the hoops 100%.
Lone Star has 2 hoops. They loop over top, without a piece below the drive shaft though. One is at each end of drive shaft.
