Spoony You have some good points about the cobras. How ever The Listers,Beck spiders, Grand Sport Corvette, RX7 turbo's, Dragons, and that silver overgrow gokart that outran everbody in the autocross last year at the Run&Gun would think differently about this thread. All the companys you listed make a great car in different price ranges. My 2 cents.
Spitz A Viper is not a modern day cobra. The closest thing to a viper is a Daytona Coupe. This is not a cobra either. I like the look of the viper but the wieght kills it unless it is a GTS-R car. I am gald that when your two clubs get together that the benchracing is great fun, but if you put 17" tire on a 427 or a Fia small block, that viper doesn't have a change of getting away unless it's a top end race. I would like to see how a nascar would do against a cobra at Limerock, Watkins Glen, or Sebring for times with equal drivers. What a test of cars. Got to go. Rick Lake |
Yes decooney.. there were 4 Contemporary for sale in the entire country last week.. as well as 10 Kirkhams 8 Shelby and about 67 SPF.. You made my point for me..
|
I love the connection with History that the Viper has. It IS a cousin to the Cobra as the builders/consultants worked together on both cars! In my book it is welcome at any Cobra related event.
To bad it's so heavy, whats up with that? Ernie |
what are they really?
SCOBRAC,
you know what cracks me up is that many of us get hung up and excited about this replicar vs. that replicar, or what's perceived to be worth more, rare, collectable, etc... (me included sometimes). IMHO, when it gets down to it, 99% of these replica Cobras we drive (excluding the JBL Cobra) are just a bunch of very simple low technology parts bolted together that anyone with a little money can buy if they wanted to; my car included that is, and just maybe yours too! :) |
Duane ,
where and what contemporary in nor cal do you know about? how loaded and how much? Thanks , Karl |
mentioning Vipers...
Hey Excalibur,
two of my close friends run lowered and modified Vipers, (ex-Kart drivers) and we go on drives ribbing each other back and forth. I mostly rib them about not be able to hear anything from their engine but that wooshing sound. HA HA. They rib me about still running 15" wheels and tires and not being able to keep right up with them in the fast twisty mountain roads for very long. They are heavy but very impressive with those super wide tires holding the line in turns. I rag them through posts on ClubCobra that I know they read, and they get me back too. Its all in good fun though. I keep telling them to be ready to watch out for a JBL or those sub 2000lb Cobras with Viper sized tires on them! I think one day they will see what a Cobra is all about in the twisty mountains. I may have to buy a set of 17s just to show them... Sometimes I tend to think that a BMW Z8 with a V8 and shorter wheelbase is actually closer and more representative to a modern day Cobra than a Viper. Vipers are pretty large cars and suprisingly nimble for the size. :) |
The best Cobra is the one under your a$$. :3DSMILE:  :3DSMILE:
Contemporary -- Not being made anymore so why include it as a choice. You have to buy someone elses preferences if you want a Contemporary. Great cars though. ERA- My choice SPF -- Very nice cars that come all together (typically) to owner to drive and enjoy right away. Shelby -- Ask Evan and Turk Kirkham -- Great car and a really good story to boot. Unique -- By all accounts a great company to deal with. ( I have only had one conversation with someone in the company many years ago) SHOULD definitely be mentioned in cars to buy with those above. Others that I don't know enough about (except factory five -- who does not know about them?) Hunter Highland Racing Boyd Doddington Emerson Shell Valley Midstates RU Crafters Lone Star Factory Five JBL Pegasus Backdraft A&C LOTS of good choices.:3DSMILE:  :3DSMILE: |

I'm getting off thread a bit here, so you can IM me if you want. There is one in Navato, for 42.5K on Cobracountry.com for starters. There was a guy at the last years Shelby meet at Infineon trying to sell his for a long time, and another guy up here that just got one put together that he might sell. So far, the ones advertised on Cobracountry or Autotrader have been the best deals I've seen. To me it's worth the $1500 to ship a car across the US if you get a better car for the money. Keep your eyes peeled after Summer, they come up all them time every year... Good Luck. |
Rick, I said "in my mind" because that is what I believe, that cobras and Viper have alot of similarities. My opinion is not up for debate becaue it is what it is. My Viper is for when I want a refined drive or when I want to go 100 or above MPH, The cobra is unrefined but I don't feel comfortable over 100MPH. The fact that the Viper is a heavy car doesnt mean its not cobra like. IMHO.
I'm looking at the Thursday, April 02 Car and Driver calendar from last year, it has a Viper and a Cobra together only. I wonder why???? just my opinion! The Spitz:D |
SpitzSpitz
Opinion over ruled! Next case...... LOL Ernie |
Excaliber, your funny:D
I say in my opinion "as you know" so I don't have to listen to twenty people tell me I'm wrong. I guess they know my opinion better then me. Got to love it. He He Spitz |
OK, so everyone agrees with me, that was easy. They are all good, but the SPF is the best. Next issue......WORLD PEACE....this topic should be easier to solve!!
|
Spitz In your mind what is unrefined. I have seen cobras with A/C, power steering, vacuum booster brakes, 1000.00$ Recaro seats, radios AM,FM, 8 track  , cassette, CD, and now DVD.;) Some cobras even have carpet or rugs in them, which ever you call them. Hard tops and soft tops. You have sleepers with turbos, NOS, and superchargers. I have Fuelinjection from Speed-pro, great system. I have one of the first ERA with power assist steering for autocross and road racing. I have 15" and 17" tires, getting two different sway bar packages, one for street and one for race. Horse power my motor only is 340 hp 428 tork off the supercharger. I will find out soon what the new numbers are. I have seen 4,5,6, speed trans, 3,4, speed autos, I think the cobras are very refined these days. My car now comes with a O-SH&T towel on the seat when a drive it poorly. As for last years calender with the cobra and the viper, you have the meassuring stick of street driven cars and the car that wants the crown. I am having fun with you, I know what you are talking about. :) Have a nice evening Rick Lake

Spoony,
I too have never been able to figure out the spf, era, UNIQUE,kirkham, csx debate....:MECOOL: |
Charley,
I always wave to the Vette owners... They wave back with a puzzled look on their faces...It's like they were expecting the finger or something.... I always liked the Vettes... Al |
If everyone liked the same thing, it would get very boring.
To me, its fun to watch people try different cars, parts, and ideas. The debates and passion just puts more gas on the fire to keep it interesting. :) |
kobra karl,
The car I know of orig cost over 100k to build. It has a 427 SO, Nash 4 speed, blue with white stripes, the bottom of the car is chromed or polish. It has about 5400 miles and is located in Diablo CA. The owner wants to sell but will not advertise. Send me an e-mail and I will send you the pictures I have and the owners e-mail. Allan |
Casaleenie, On the mutual respect thing. I think most vette owners and viper owners like the Cobras as much as we do. Like you, I admire their cars too. In fact, in the 2 years now I have been driving this car, the only others I have run across which did not show a mutual respect for my car (and acted stuck-up) were the 2 ferrari owners I have run across (no lie!). Too bad, cause I like the ferraris too! I guess that's their problem if they think gobs of money make their rides better. I would love to own a ferrari, it must be a tremendous ride at the limits of adhesion, but the cobra has a better image attached to it and my cobra handles just fine thank-you-very-much.
Charlie |
Rick, you have won me over, I've decide to refine my cobra. Where can I get one of those 8 track tape players you were talking about?
Spitz:3DSMILE: |
Decooney
Different strokes for different folks. Or It would be a dull world if we were all the same.
Cobras, I like them all. I hear them coming, stop what I am doing and watch them go by; no matter who made them. |
