Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda....

I think this may have been broached previously, but anyways....What cars did you "almost" buy or coulda bought (not that they were just available at a given time, but you actually came close or turned down a "deal") that of course you now regret with wailing and gnashing of teeth:CRY:

You know, the Duesenberg that you passed on cause the radio didn't work, the Bugatti that you turned down because "parts are probably hard to get" etc.

My list-

Cobra 427 CSX 3327 that I agreed to buy but chickened out of because I had to finance $2000.00 of the cost and the $120.00 monthly payment scared me! That was 1973 and I was getting married soon. When I realized that the the $120.00 would be needed towards the rent, I backed out of the deal. Another friend of mine bought it (for almost $1000.00 more than I had agreed) and I got to use anyhow...

Ferrari 275 GTB- 1972, Local import dealer that sold Alfas and used (I mean REALLY used) exotics had it. $5000.00 with a dicey clutch. Only about $4500.00 out of my reach at the time. I was a crew member on the Alfa sedan they ran in the 2.5 Trans-Am and they were willing to cut me an even better deal. So maybe I was only $4200.00 out of it...

Every GT40 ever advertised-My theory was that $10,000.00 was doable if I stopped eating and never spent another cent of my pay on anything else. Every time I picked up AUTOWEEK or ROAD & TRACK there was an ad from Harry Heinl in Miami Lakes Fl. with another GT40 or Mark IV set up for the street at an "attractive" price, however as everything is relative I was no closer to buying one then than I am now.

1962 Ford Galaxie 500 406 convertible, circa 1982. A Canadian had it at a show, clean, sharp car...came with extra NOS quarters and fenders. Needed some chrome work. He wanted $2400.00 but said he would take a quick $2000.00

1968 Cougar XR-7 G with a factory 427.....local collector car auction in 1983. Guy drove it up from Kentucky, was willing to take $2500.00 rather than wait for the car to run in the auction lane. I passed....STUPID, STUPID, STUPID....car sold for around $2800.00 in the auction.

1960 MGA Convertible $1,200.

65 Corvette Convertible $5,500.

68 Corvette Convertible $7,200

91 Toyota Land Cruiser $14K

Unique 289 FIA..

Actually I bought all these cars... much to my wife's dismay. Several boats and an airplane interspersed between the cars...

Can't think of anything that I wanted that I didn't whine long and hard enough to get.... That woman is a push over....

'67 Corvette, 427, 4spd., light blue w/ white leather and white convertible top. The car was only 5k (1981), but I couldn't sell my '77 GMC Jimmy fast enough to buy it. The guy was selling it to buy a station wagon! The 5k price was a good buy even in '81.

Bright orange '69 Dodge Super Bee, with the 440 Six-Pak, in the early eighties. The used-car dealer next to my dad's shop was selling it for $4500. Alas, that may as well have been $45,000 to me then...
