Colin builds headers

Well, finally the motor is back together and it's time to build headers. Thank god I had the old 2 1/8 ones on the car last year when I hit the wall. I had bought a 2 3/8 header kit and a pair of Dynomax collector mufflers over the last few years but hadn't built them yet.
So far in 12 hours, I got myself set up, a tentative plan figured out, collector muffler placed, and two tubes built. I don't know if that's good or bad for a dumb rookie but I'm enjoying the challege so far. I sure hope I can meet the 95 db rule with just the collector mufflers. I'll post more as progress happens |

Nice looking colin, like you I built mine. Ordered 'J' bends from hooker and had a machine shop mill the 1/4" exhaust flanges, one thing that made the job simple was to tact weld the side pipes to the frame, then connect everything.

Thanks, the sidepipes are already mounted to the car. I've just tack welded the collector mufflers for now. The #2 header is also tack welded to the collector so now it's all stabilized and I can build all the rest to the same spot. I'm trying to keep them closer in length than the 2 1/8 set that came with the car. They varied from 24 1/2" to 30 1/4".

I remember doing that on mine. Are you going to flange the sidepipes to the headermuffler for quick disconnect? Now that you have better weather, it's time to get her out again , 7 seconds of fun ! Perry.:cool: |

I'll make a connector piece that can come off with the sidepipes. When I want to run without them I'll just take my turndowns off the sidepipes and screw them to the collector mufflers.

My body has a little square hole where the pipes come through. Are you going to modify the whole lower fender piece for this header? And, well, you know, Cobra's are supposed to go around corners pretty well, but with those skinnys up front......:confused: Nice motor! Paul |

Hey Colin, good to see some progress. One of the guys here used a hose clamp with holes in it. He could clamp pipes together and tack weld thru the holes. Are you fusion welding as much as possible? Lookin good so far!

Hi Paul, yes I'll have to alter the holes in the fender as needed. Those front tires are great for slalom!!! They might be skinny but there are very few cones they can't knock over.
I'm TIG welding Nick, is that fusion welding? I've MIG and stick welded a little in the past but this is my first time with the TIG. I hate to admit my teacher was right all those years in school, learning is fun. Colin |
