Motor mount differences?
 

Does anyone know if there are any major differences between the early mid 60's engine mounts and the later 69-73 mounts, as some have clearance for hi-po exhausts or whatever.

My manufacturer said use early small block Ford standard height mounts, but would like to make sure before I order as the parts shop isn't just down the road here.

I borrowed some Falcon GT (aussie) mounts and they were good about 1972 vintage, but want to go urethane and unable to find any in Aus.

The bolt pattern to the frame is different on later 302 installations compared to those of the cars from the 60's. Not sure of what information you are looking for. I believe urethane mounts are available for the 5.0 liter Mustang. I don't know of any urethane mounts for early 289/302 application, I surmise primarily due to lack of demand.

I can get standard mounts here, very cheap they appear to be okay, so I might just drill a hole through them and fit a high tensile 7/16" unf bolt and nyloc, that way they can only move so far and definitely wont come apart.

Will keep looking one crowd has them for the 69 Mustang windsor, but I dont know whether they are different to the early cars.

When I built my LAE in '94 I planned on an FE engine (390) and was told by LAE that the stock mounts would work fine.

Later I found that my engine was about an inch higher than expected. When I talked to LAE about the differences we found that the engine mounts I used, from a '64 T-Bird, were shaped different than what he had in mind.

I never saw the mounth he talked about but he said they were sort of like a round rubber biscuit encased in a metal frame with the main hole in the center of the biscuit.

The mounts I had were formed in a "C" shape, The bottom horrizontal portion of the "C" had the bolt holes to mount to the frame, the top horizontal portion had the holes to mount to the block. The vertical portion was about 1-1/2" to 2" high. The whole thing was rubber coated.

I used the mounts I had and lowered the expansion tank that mounted to the block, removed the heater under the carb, replaced the oil filler cap with a lower profile shinny one and used the shorter filter element in my cast oval air cleaner.

I did have one place on the under side of the hood where I saw some minor sigh of the air cleaner making contact. A little sand paper and buffing compound and that went away (I had a colored Gel-Coat finish). Love that "NO Paint Option".

The up side is that I had another inch or so of clearance before my oil pan scraped on anything in the road.

Yes all those clearance problems, I had an FE 390 in my first car with standard type mounts, worked fine, did have minimal room with the air cleaner though!


I am going to give up looking for urethane mounts, and go with the aussie falcon standard mounts I know they work, and as mentioned I can always fit a bolt through them (cringe) but it would work in limiting movement, and they are only about US$14 each!
