I think this was a RM auction. It would have taken place around the first quarter of this year---a little after Barrett Jackson. The Comp car did bring a real good price. There is hope for me, yet. |
I believe his remarks about the replica are right on. If someone wants good money Cobra Replica they better have detailed information as to why it is worth it.
An ERA with a 427 Side Oiler is worth a ton more than a Fiberglass Cobra Replica with a big block....and they could be the same car! |
While we are on the topic of accuracy, the photos of the original and replica Cobras are clearly the same car (both photos are of the original).
That is, unless the replica is an exact copy of the original. Which replica manufacturer assigns a serial number that begins with 'D' ? |
Both have the cutout in the hood too. Same car in both pics. What's the deal?

I of course noticed that they were the same car - I even pointed out to a friend that the replica was a replica of the real one being sold on the same page.... ......or is it stupid? |
The publication is Sports Car Market - the June issue. I consider this periodical as one of the better ones out there and a good barameter of the market with timely auction reports and good analysis. You guys with the replicas- don't be too offended by the remarks of the publisher. Keith Martin and staff have always made it a point "poo-poo" replicas (Porsche,Cobra, Ferrari) in their reviews. "Tupper Ware Cobra" and "Fakey-Doo" are their trademark expressions. I also noticed the duplicate photo when I got my issue a couple of weeks ago, too bad - a simple and careless mistake that should have been caught.

Cal, things are looking up for those real Cobra race cars. Chic Ford's (or actually his wife's) CSX 2260 recently sold for $810,000 to a gentleman in California that already has an original Daytona Coupe, I believe its the one Shelby used to have. 2260 was one of the original five FIA cars, driven by such notables as Ken Miles,Innes Ireland, Masten Gregory, Jo Schlesser and Phil Hill.

Going off of my memory - the '97 Registry said that CSX 3006 changed hands for in excess of $900k about a dozen years ago. We still have a way to go to catch up with the excesses of the Japanese influence of that era.

Interesting on the FIA Chic Ford car. Friends in the know say that the car needs everything to get it back into shape. An expensive resto. Hard to believe that kind of $$$ for a "stem to stern" project. |
Cal, The car was disassembled sometime after I saw it in 1987, after it was sent to West Virginia to "Butch's shop" for a restoration. You can see the bondo in the nose on the pictures I have posted here before. Apparently the body was removed and the car disassembled and not put back together over the last 10-15 years, so it probably does need a complete restoration. As Ned Scudder has recently said, it appears that the car was never re-chassised, as previously thought.
It is still the fastest car I have ever driven and it handled like it was on rails around the Ohio countryside where Chic let me drive it, many years ago. I think the numbers regarding the sale price are accurate, based on several independent unsolicited comments from reliable sources. I was interested in the car myself, but couldn't come up with that price! |
Too bad 2260 don't have the original gas cap, MAP, you know where it is?
