Cobra Daytona at Goodwood
 

Hi, i,ve read that a Cobra Daytona will be at the Goodwood F.O.S. in three weeks time, does anyone know which one?

May we open a discussion on 2286? :D

I remember reading 2286 was the chassis that was to get the aluminum 390. The chassis was supposedly stretched 3" or so to allow for the larger engine. Then it was decided to run a 289, and the chassis was returned to a 90" wheelbase.

Now my question, wouldn't that have been quite a task? I can't even imagine such a procedure being worth the trouble financially. The first owner of 2286 once commented on Club Cobra that the welding and fabrication work was first rate. He didn't remember seeing a splice or split in the chassis.

I would love to get an up close look at 2286. **)

CSX 2286 has the least amount of race history, if I remember correctly; given that it was pressed into service very late due to the extended chassis business.

Walton's coupe is much like every thing else he owns---drop dead flawless. Despite his penchant for really pushing the cars hard on the track (and he is a very good driver, too) the presentation of his vehicles are always first rate.

When Paul brought this subject up, I thought the Coupe in question might be Robert Sarrailh's sanction coupe (sort of a French McCluskey look-a-like). An outstanding car by any measure, and it was at GW a couple of years ago. Phil Remington told me, after his ride with Sarailha around the GW circuit, that the coupe was a "heck of a lot better than anything we ever built at Shelby's". Not a bad testimonial.

Sarrailha, with Le Man drivers Patrick Tambay and Henri Pescolaro, drove the winning CSX 2402 to victory at GW last year, fighting off two E-Type Lightweight "cheater motor" Jaguars in the process. That Cobra was so well balanced you couldn't believe it. Ernie Nagamatsu told me that when he was at GW in '01 with his Cobra, the Sarrailha team had three cameras under the car shooting pictures of the chassis at high speed. The car uses a 289 cid, Weber equipped, 10.5:1 compression engine. The handling is outstanding.

I'll try and get some pictures too. Goodwood Festival is my second most favourite event of the year - the first being the Goodwood Revival. Ford will be the featured make this year and plan to show the 3 LeMans GT40's that crossed the line together.

I have that picture autographed by both drivers and framed on my wall!
