What thermostadt do you guys use on a 460, 160 or 180?
I heard that 160 is too cool for proper combustion and oil junk burn off. . . |

For your motor, I'd go with at least 220 ;) . That'll keep you from getting yourself in trouble. Tony put a 160 in mine because of....well....they way I drive the car. I imagine with your motor, you'll want the 160. Your temps will climb above that with a good long run. I did a parade this morning, and I hit almost 180. I'll bet when I push it hard, with my new 351 in it, I'll go over 180. No problems burning junk off. Steve |
Use the 180. Drill a small hole in it to let the air out of the manifold.

Mine is new and also due to the horsepower
It runs hot. I assume I have the 180 unit, but after 5 minutes of running it would not matter either way, since in traffic and 90 degree weather she runs 200+ F (with system additives, but I still have the original fill in there, so when I eliminate the antifreeze and add water wetter only she may run cooler)
Use the 180, since your water is VERY likely to exceed that by at least a bit on any warm day.... |
Don't have one. Overdrive on the waterpump and she'll still run "warm" 220 in stop and go. Will drop back down to 185 once you get back to open road. Of course, being in GA doesn't help.

With a motor like Rob is putting in, and I've seen the monster (it's awesome), wouldn't it get hot whether it is a 160 or 180? Rob lives real close to me, and it's hot here this time of year. We had put a 160 in my little 302 because it just couldn't keep cool with the hard driving I was doing (open track and such). Now with my aluminum radiator and 160 thermostat, I'm staying real cool. Do you think I should change to a 180 with the 351W I'm about to put in? Keep in mind my car will see the high stress of the open track events. Steve |
Assuming it can stay cool at 160-165, is that too cold? It may be able to stay there with the huge radiator and oil cooler and three fans it's getting. . . .

A 2800 cfm electric fan and a HUGE 7 core radiator... still runs hot...

That block, yours too Steve should run 180/190. Over 200 and it is starting to get hot, 220 and it IS hot, 230 and up could do serious damage. EFI engines are made and need to run hotter.
Guys with small blocks, especially running "oil coolers" are probably doing more damage to their motor than they realize. Ask Bob about this... a "certified" opinion! DV...if ya gotta have an oil cooler and your oil temp aint gettin' to at least 190/200 block it off! |
