Valve cover breather blowing smoke...
Is it normal for a valve cover breather to blow a lot of smoke? The valve covers seem to always have a coating of oil on them.
Is this normal, or a symptom of something more serious?? When the engine is turned off, there is a vapour trail coming from the intake (not running a filter right now while de-bugging) |

If you are just breaking in your engine , your rings may still be seating , giving you a little blowbye no pcv? |
PCV
Most engines these days need to have PCV.
If the engine is fresh, you will burn oil for a short while. The oil you are getting on the valve covers is oil blow-by. Put a gromet in one of the openings with a baffle behind it and plug a PCV Vavle in it. Run a hose from the valve to the vac. inlet at the base of the carb. Adjust carb. Engine is new (less than 500 miles). It has a breather and also a PCV into the intake. It just looked like there was too much oil mist....

It's the rings seating in...
Be sure your breather is on the driver's side, PCV on the passenger's side. And be SURE NOT to use synthetic oil for the first 3 to 5 K miles (depending on who you believe.. I am going for 5 k upon reflection)
My motor breathed heavy mist until about 2k miles, including puking some out of the dipstick area, until I went with a billet/o-ring type. Much better, no mist or weepage on the valve covers at all, now that the rings are seating ;) |
The breather is on the passanger side (302 engine)?? Is this part of the problem?

Every recommendation I have heard...
Indicates that yours is on backwards. Maybe it has something to do with the direction of rotation of the crank...?

On my engine, breather on passenger side, pcv on drivers side (corrected for lhd). No oil, no smoke, no misting.

It doesn't matter which side it is on, well at least not on an engine I am aware of.
You are venting the engine of gasses that slip past the chambers and pressurize the crankcase. Taking them back in the engine with the PCV system. Another thing, make sure you have a valve that is for you engine. I disassemled an engine in a vette thinking the rings had gone, and it turned out to be a Ford PCV valve in the cheby. Blew the worst blue smoke when you got on it. Just my $0.04 worth. |
