Tire Evaluation?
I'm still in the research stage while waiting for my ERA. It's ordered but I've got a while before it's ready.
Has anyone had any experience with either the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 or the Dunlop SP Sport 8000? Planned use will be strictly street but since I live in the great Northwet (no that's not a typo) up here in Oregon so the tires will have to function in the rain. Planning on putting them on 17" wheels 11" Rear 9.5" Front 315/35/17 Rear 275/40/17 Front. I'd appreciate any insight as to grip and wear. Thanks in advance to the info. Don Choura |

You're gonna appreciate the F1"s up in Portland.....Great wet traction tire....excellent dry traction tire...

I put a set of 17" Michilen Sports on mine a few weeks ago. They work real well. Far better wet weather traction than the 15" TAs

Ditto Tim's comments. I'm running the Michelin Pilot Sports in a 335/35/17 and 275/40/17 and am very happy with them. They are a bit pricey though.

Firestone Firehawk
I've got a set of 17" Firestone Firehawk SZ 50EPs on my car. 245 up front, 275 rear. They are phenomenal for a street tire. Tons of grip. I don't really drive the car in the rain, but they say it is a great wet weather tire. I had to drive it in a light shower this morning to bring to my mechanic and I had no troubles. The tread wear is unbelievable. I autox and open track my car, and the tires are wearing very evenly and very slowly. I can't believe how much tread is still left. The one down side is $$. They ain't cheap. But still a fantastic tire.

I had a Corvette with the F1 and another with the GSC's.
I could not stand either tire. After 10,000 miles they turned to noisy trash. They lasted 22,000 to 25,000 miles and I was so glad to replace them. I replaced the GSC's (93 Vette) with Dunlop D40M2 (Sport 8000 predecessor) I went through two sets, because they were awesome! Way better grip wet and dry and silent! They lasted about 15,000 miles. But the 8000's will last longer. I replaced the F1's with Bridgestone Pole Position S03, wow! They are by far the best tires I ever had! Traction control and active handling seemed like the were not there anymore because they never needed to come on anymore. Off the line traction, conering, eveything was so superior to the F1, it was not even funny. It was like I lowered the car and changed the suspension geometry, it handled so much better! |
I'm also running the Pilot sports. I've got 600 track, and 11,000 miles overall. And, I still have plenty of tread left. I've even ran them at Laguna Saca in the rain. They held pretty well. Better than a lot of so called all weather tires. They are pricey. But (you get's what you pay for)

I'm running S-03 Pole Positions on my '01 Mustang Bullitt - they are great! Sticky, predicable, quiet, good in the rain, and seem to be wearing very well.
