Tool Cleaning
HI, FOLKS,
I'M IN THE NEW HOUSE (THE "INTERIM" NEW HOUSE) AND TRYING TO GET ALL MY TOOLS TOGETHER AND CLEANED UP. ABOUT TWO MONTHS BEFORE THE FIRE AT MY PREVIOUS HOME I HAD SPENT NEARLY $3000.00 ON ALL NEW HAND TOOLS AND SOME SPECIAL TOOLS - MOSTLY CRAFTSMEN. THE FIRE TOOK OUT THE ENTIRE HOUSE EXCEPT THE GARAGE. SHORTLY AFTER THE FIRE I WENT INTO THE GARAGE AND CLEANED AND DRYED OFF ALL OF THE TOOLS AND SET THEM IN SOME SEMBLENCE OF ORDER. GOOD SO FAR. IN FEBRUARY THE PROTECTIVE TARPS OVER THE ROOF OF THE GARAGE (THE SECOND FLOOR OF THE GARAGE WAS BADLY BURNED) BLEW OFF IN A STORM AND EVERYTHING INSIDE WAS SOAKED AGAIN. I DIDN'T REALIZE IT FOR SEVERAL MONTHS AND NOW MOST OF THE TOOLS ARE STAINED AND HAVE A LIGHT COATING OF RUST. ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TTO HOW I MIGHT CLEAN THE RUST - WITHOUT DOING MORE DAMAGE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO CHECK WITH THE "BRAIN TRUST" HERE BEFORE LAUNCHING INTO THE PROJECT. THANKS, AND Y'ALL HAVE AREALLY GREAT DAY, BLACKJACK |
Missed you on SAT:CRY: As for the tools spray or soak them in WD-40. That will take the rust right off. For the stubborn ones, bring them back to Sears and exchange them under the Lifetime warranty.
Catch ya later Ed |

I de-rusted a bucket of neglected tools with CLR houshold cleaner. It is supposed to dissolve calcium lime and rust, it did remove the rust after an hour's soak and a quick polish with a scotchbrite pad. Nasty stuff though.

RAKI WILL NOT ONLY RUIN THE FINISH IT WILL DISOLVE THE METAL UNDERNEATH. MR. FIXIT - - WHAT IS "CLR" AND WHERE CAN I GET SOME??? WHAT EFFECT MIGHT IT HAVE ON THE PLASTIC (?) HANDLES??? THANKS GUYS. |
It's a household cleaner made to remove rust stains and hard water deposits from your sinks and such. I bought it at the grocery store just for that purpose, thought I'd give it a try on the bucket of (cheap) rusty sockets I inherited. It did disolve the rust, but you'll want to thoroghly rinse the tools afterwards, then maybe a light coat of oil. I usd it on cheap sockets that I ended up giving away, not my Snap-on stuff. You might want to try it on a test piece first. If it were my good tools, I would probubly use Blue-Wonder gun cleaner.

MR. FIXIT,
I'LL TRY THE "BLUE WONDER" FIRST. I PRESUME I CAN GET IT AT THE LOCAL GUN SHOP. THANKS VERY MUCH FOR THE HELP. BLACKJACK |
