Quieter Sidepipes?

Has anyone replaced the mufflers in their sidepipes with quieter ones? Mine are loud and I would like something a little quieter with a deep sound and that doesn't restrict flow. If so what brand and where did you find them?

BPWilliams 08-07-2003 04:55 PM

You can purchase "Cones" that go in the end of your side pipes from Summit racing. One of the guys that has a FFR used them and it helped quite a bit. Myself, Bring on the sound, I like the loud. Let's them know your comming, and get out of the way.
Keep it above 100...........

Installed the Car Chemistry inserts, three disc, directly into the end of the header pipe just prior to the inlet of the muffler. Along with a custom made muffler from Arizona Exhaust ( now retired ? ), resulted in a quiet system.

Unknown has to how much back pressure, if any, the discs created, but not noticeable in normal street driving.

Did not install either the restictor which narrows the center tube in the discs or the cap on the center tube which forces all the exhaust gasses into the discs

Reference the Summit Racing site for Car Chemistry:

A few guys recommended Lobacks to me ,I have them but haven't had them welded in yet. They are spiral all the way through the muffler, used a lot on stock cars to quiet without power reduction.{hopefully they work].I hope to get them put in a couple of weeks .

After I blew out the baffles on my sidepipes (racing, high rpm downshifts etc.) I noticed the increased horse power, it helped a LOT.

,,,,oh by the way, I HAVE to wear ear plugs when ever I drive it now. It's WAY loud (I love it)! LOL

I had mounted ( welded in ) Dynatech Vortex Cones

on my side pipes (between headers and muffler) with very good results.

Hey Mike/ERA626,

Louder? Which cam, heads, rockers did you go with on your motor? With the right cam/heads and porting, it should be so loud that you would be saying the opposite. Typically ERAs are pretty loud to begin with. Seriously, I'm starting to have wear ear plugs now after taking longer drives... I wondered the same thing on my last car and it all came down the the cam/heads and setup.

We are about to have a new set made for our car. 3.5 inch pipes with a 12 inch section of chambered pipe just to take the harshness off straight exhaust. The stock sidepipes from ERA sound good, but they just aren't loud enough.

Hey Glenn,
have you ever heard a 427 SC ERA with a higher-performance 427 or 428 in it?. I'm not referring to what ERA sells with their turnkey cars... pretty mild for longevity reasons...but something a few notches up?. I'm not conservative at all and I can tell you that my car will drown out a Harley with a Thunder Header fairly easily. I have heard some of the ERA FIAs, and I agree they are definitely quieter but still sound very cool once you wack down on them a bit. It would be nice to have adjustable volume for those days when you want it quieter, and other times when you want it really LOUD! :)

Mike,
that should sound pretty good with that setup you have there. How do you like the torque of the motor? Does it push you back in the seat pretty good I woud think... See Ya.

SSSnake 08-10-2003 05:14 AM

Decooney,

I can't say i have heard an ERA 427 car. I just saw my first ERA big block car in PA yesterday at the Pittsburgh thunder cruise. We basically want the louder pipes for safety purposes. Since the car is so small, if people can't see us coming, they'll hear us.

Yeah right :D

decooney,
I like the motor, however I still have issues with the carbs.

decooney 08-10-2003 10:50 AM

Carbs...

Hey Mike,
when you say carb(s), I'm assuming you are running dual carbs...

- are they Holley 450s? New, Used?
- do you know what the jet sizes are?
- are you running a fuel log?
- what type or size air cleaners are on there?
- how much vacuum does it have at idle speed?

I'm no pro but I've been tuning and helping my friend to tune our carbs in increments and there is a noticeable difference in performance between the stock carb settings and what we've arrived at so far. My 830 HP carb was too rich, and his dual 450s were too lean. We've changed jets, air cleaners on both, and discharge nozzles on the HP carbs. I'm going to drop down in PowerValves just a tad. The Holley carb tuning book really helped out. Good Luck, it's fun and the sound even changes a bit once you get it spot on. :)
