I RECENTLY CHANGED FROM A 15" TO A 14". THE REASON FOR THE CHANGE WAS MY ORIGINAL (MAKE THAT "FIRST") WHEEL WAS DAMAGED IN THE EXPLOSION. I GOT THE NEW ONE AT THE RAFFLE AT SPRING FLING. IT'S ON MY ERA COBRA - NOT THE EXCALIBUR. I IMMEDIATELY NOTICED A SLIGHT DIFFERENCE IN STEERING. IT FELT A LITTLE QUICKER BUT ALSO MORE PRECISE. THERE IS NO DISCERNABLE INCREASE IN TURNING EFFORT. BIGGEST NOTE WAS WHAT SEEMS TO BE A LOT MORE ROOM IN THE COCKPIT. I WAS REALLY SURPRISED BECAUSE I WASN'T EXPECTING ANY PERCEIVABLE DIFFERENCE. GIVE IT A LOT OF THOUGHT BEFORE CHANGING OUT THE EXCALIBURS RACK FOR A POWER RACK. IF YOU DO AND GET A SMALLER WHEEL YOU WILL ALMOST SURELY NEED A BIG CO-PILOT ON BOARD TO HELP YOU STEER. YOU WON'T HAVE TO TURN IT VERY MUCH TO MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN AT SPEED BUT SLOWER SPEEDS IT WILL FEEL LIKE IT HAS A GRAY DOG PAINTED ON THE SIDE. BEST POLICY IS USUALLY "CHANGE ONLY ONE THING AT A TIME" AND MEASURE THE RESULTS. ANOTHER GOOD POLICY IS "START WITH THE CHEAPEST OR EASIEST THINGS FIRST". REGARDLESS OF WHICH ORDER THINGS ARE CHANGED - - IT WILL ALWAYS BE THE LAST THING YOU TRY THAT WORKS. Y'ALL HAVE A REALY GREAT DAY. BLACKJACK |
Better Lap Times?

I was debating changing my steering wheel also to a racing type diameter with thicker grip from the original Moto-Lita. Then I picked up a copy of "SPEED SECRETS Professional Race Driving Techniques" by Ross Bently. I suggest that anyone considering doing any track events spend the $15.95 for the book before doing anything else. I got my copy at Barnes and Noble. The bottom line is; very little hand movement, moving the wheel less, and using the brakes and accelerator to get you thru the corners faster. He discusses alot in 156 pages, but pretty easy to understand. Great dicussion on the Ideal Line vs. Geometric line thru the corners. I really liked his comment: "keep it straight and smooth." Gives new meaning to "KISS." I can't wait to try out some of his suggestions :D :D TL :MECOOL: |
I prefer a smaller wheel, although I am known for picking up small cars and putting them in planter beds in college (with the help of a couple friends).
I have openly opined going with a 14" momo wheel on my car to the horror of anglophile and cobra purists. I have an original mahogany wheel now but it may take a place of honor on my garage wall. If you were going to go with a 14" leather wrapped wheel (fine corinthian leather of course :LOL:) any suggestions? |
I had a beautiful Nardo Classico 14" on my Butler. I forgot to take the dam* thing off before Douglass drove off in the car.:CRY:
I may get another. A little more leg room would be be nice, and it's just prettier than these "original" looking things we get put on the cars. Without the hub--hard to tell the difference. |
I used power steering and a 14" Lecarra leather steering wheel. This is a pure street and touring car. Love the wheel size & feel. The rack is an AGR high effort, standard ratio (20:1, or about 3 turns, rack to rack). the pump is a rebuilt Saginaw from AGR with an RB's automotive street rod low presure relief valve. It works great, and provides good road feel on the highway. Parking, as one might expectt, is a breeze.
For the track, you might consider the AGR close ratio, high effort power rack. It has a 15:1 ratio and slightly under 2 1/2 turns lock-lock. They are intended for racing and gymkhana Mustangs. Think it would be too quick for a street Cobra. |
Power steering? is that like over steer or power-braking? Maybe what those sprint car fellas do with the back end all kicked out?

SCOBRAC yeah THAT kind of power steering is why I'm thinking I might need the other kind of power steering when I put that small wheel on.

Me too... Now, anyone know where I can find a very nice wheel that will fit the Cobra 6 bolt 2 1/2" pattern without an adapter? Or for that matter a 2 1/2 to 2 3/4" (momo pattern) adaptor?
