A Little Off The Subject - - -

HI, GUYS - -

THIS IS A LITTLE OFF THE SUBJECT OF COBRAS - - IT RELATES TO MY TOW VEHICLE.

MY '97 FORD EXPEDITION SUDDENLY "DROPPED" ITS REAR END. IT HAS THE "AIR SUSPENSION" AND THE DEALER SAYS THAT BOTH REAR AIR BAGS ARE LEAKING AND THE AIR PUMP IS SHOT. THE CAR HAS 54K MILES ON IT.

THE DEALER WANTS THE PRICE OF A DECENT DONOR CAR TO FIX IT. $1380.00.

IT SEEMS THAT I HEARD (SOMEWHERE) OF AN AFTER MARKET KIT CONSISTING OF STANDARD TYPE SHOCKS TO REPLACE THE AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM. I USE THE EXPEDITION TO PULL THE CAR TRAILER ONLY OCASSIONALLY. (MAYBE ONCE A YEAR - AT THE MOST.)

ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS, SUCH AS FEASIBLITY, AVAILABILITY, COST, ETC. WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

THANKS - AND - Y'ALL HAVE A REALLY GREAT DAY,

BLACKJACK

BJ,

I just traded my 98 Expedition in with 85000 miles on a new F-250 6.0 diesel Supercab PU. I have been towing my cobra about 4 to 5 thousand miles a year and needed a bettter tow vehicle for the road.

My Expedition didn't have the air bags but a friend of mine did in Wisconsin. His air bags also went down and he switched over to the 98 model rear suspension except he put in the progressive rear springs (I think that is what he said). Did the whole conversion for under $300.

Sorry we all left you hanging.

Clois

Blackjack
I do not have one but if there is a four wheel parts store near you they sell better quality replacement parts than ford does for that very reason. The factory ones are junk from the get go. The reason your pump is bad is because it is worn out trying to keep those leaking bags full.

This may not be the answer you wanted but four whhel parts sells good stuff. They have lifted every f250 & 350 in Texas seems like. One of the options is air bags. If i remember they did not add that much more to the price.

Get them to send you a catolog. I get one every month for free. It is like a off road magazine. Heck the name is Off Road Adventures. It has monthly specials and stories on trail events and the manufacturer test of the new vehicles. Not a bad magazine for free!
