How bad was the flip top cobra damaged?
Did anyone who went to Monterey Historics see the crash of the one of fliptop cobra? How bad was the damage? I have a picture of it under a car cover and it looks like a big dent right behind the front wheel on the right side.
Anybody see it happen? Chuck Brandt |
Right side damage fore and aft. Nothing structural and Rich should have it back in shape shortly. He hit a pool of oil thrown on the track by Dick Smith.

Snakeeyes must have been devestated! Glad to hear that the damage wasn't major.
Didn't you say Mr. Evans was with you? How is he; miss his posting; hope he is OK? Dave Lowell |
Thanks
Thanks for the report, very glad it's fixable.

Dick seemed to be moving out pretty well...behind and within that pack of GT40s. I was not sure what happened to those guys. That explains it.

Dick lost an oil line.

The car has damage around the passenger-side front fender and a pretty good "punch" right on the passenger-side rear corner. The hit on the rear caused the aluminum under the gas cap cutout to crease into a "V" shape. Rich said he considers the damage "light to moderate", but it appears it is all cosmetic. He is having the suspension crack-tested right now in CA and then will return the car home to begin straightening up the bodywork. More importantly, he appears to be fine other than being understandably bummed. He is a great guy and I'm glad he was not injured. Bad luck for all concerned. Smith started 19th and had worked up to 9th, with several laps to go and another pack of cars just ahead of him, when he lost the oil line.

I was with Snakeeyes when the accident happened. We immediately put him on oxygen and called the paramedics who arrived with two emergency vehicles. A noted M.D., who specializes in shock and severe mental trama, was in attendance at the races. He provided the consultation to the ambulance drivers. After an hour or so, he seemed to snap out of it. We hauled him up to Terry K's land yacht where Terry was grilling dinner. Snakeeyes wouldn't eat anything unless it was in the shape of CSX 2196. That hamburger Terry prepared for him was the strangest looking thing I ever saw. The bun was actually "hinged" to the meat................... |
What a complete lie!!!
...it only took me 45 minutes to snap out of it...

I traded e-mails with Bill Wells on this subject and he got in contact with Dick Smith's friend and mechanic. He wrote Bill and told him that Dick's motor broke a connecting rod and punched a hole in the block. I wonder what the full story is. Did you see Dick's car in the pits after the race? Maybe he lost the oil line and then broke the motor. --Mike |
Good one, guys...made me laugh:)
|
Yikes......
Glad to hear that Rich thinks the damage is fixable quickly. As for Dick, wasn't that a new motor in his car? %/ - Bill - |
Bill
Brand new motor. Mike Don't know which came first at this point--chicken or the egg. Didn't see it there--just initial reports by phone. I'll be seeing it at the shop in a few days. |
I think Snakeyes was fine after a large JD with a splash of diet coke to numb the pain. After that he was actually saying it didn't really look that bad.

That was in reference to the waitress at the Chart House!
