Alternator help ........please???
I am using an early Ford alternator (63/64 Full size Mercury). It has the round back as fitted to the 289 Cobras, (see gallery photo). It has a plastic plug that houses 3 wires. (1) 10 gauge (obviously for the battery)on a 1/4" stud & (2) others that are 16/18 gauge that plug on to male spade terminals . These spade terminals have me baffled which are they (??) Field, Ground, or Stator??? It does not have the individual studs like later model types. So far (today) I have not been able to find an answer.
Thanks in advance Rick |
Rick, I bet if you look carefully you will be able to see the cast letters for Field, Ground and Stator.
If the alternator is already on the engine and the engine is IN the car, use a mirror and see if I am right. TURK |

The two spade terminals and single stud are unmarked, there aren't any letters cast into the case or stamped adjacent to the terminals themselves that are visable.

That is the correct alternator for an early small block Cobra and as it has the correct "plug in" connection it f does not have the "A, S, F" cast in like later Ford alternators do. Watch my lips...TURK WAS WRONG!!! (grin, grin..)
The wire harness to the alt is as follows: Black= "Alternator" goes to the starter relay "A" terminal and thus to the battery White= is "Field" and feeds to the regulator field terminal White w/ Black= Stator feed to the regulator "S" terminal Black w/ Red= Ground, should have a ring terminal on the end to screw into a body/chassis spot. BTW, if you want I might have access to NEW harnesses for that set, that is the harness that plugs into the alt and feeds to the regulator. Email me if you need one. Hope this helps, Rick :3DSMILE: And now I have looked at your picture in better detail I see that the wire colors are not as I described, the big Ford/Mercury may have used a different color code, I relayed the setup used by the 63-64 T-Birds. I will look for my full size ford wire charts and let you know. Email me for more info Rick |
Perhaps....
